If it's the original 60-62 rear axle with a removable chunk and a rear cover, then it may be difficult to find limited slip or posi-trac parts to fit it. Later 12 bolt(63 up) axles are completely different. 12 bolt refers to the number of bolts in the cover. Hope that helps.

More information that I discovered. The 1960 GM shop manual has about 20 or so pages of information on the stock rearend and 2 pages on the Posi.Basically the 2 pages states that Eaton posi is available as an option and that the basic service is the same for both rearends and that the housing is the same for both, then it goes on to show an exploded view of the posi unit.
I noticed that the ring gear attaches to the Posi with 10 bolts whereas in the stock unit the ring gear has 12 bolts. This seems bassacwards to me!
I always thought that the ring and pinion where heavier and larger and would not fit in a standard housing?????
HELP!!!!! I know some of you are running with Posi's and any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey Short66sickfleet,the number you gave looks to be a part number for the 3rd member, maybe someone with a parts book can help. The actual code for the gear ratio and designation of the rearend (that is stock or posi) is located on the other side of the housing and its very hard to locate.I took a steel brush to mine and was finally able to get her clean enough to read. You will be looking for a 2 digit code and here is what that will tell you provided its stock. MA or MD=3.90 RATIO ALL 1/2 TON EXCEPT POSI,MB or ME= ALL 3.38 RATIO,MC or MF 3.90 POSI 1/2 TON.
Hope this helps

My 1960 parts catalog doesn't have a section for the rear axle. Neither does it have a listing for that part number. So, my post here is pretty pointless isn't it?
