At wits end with a motor problem Help please!

Ok here goes...its a 307 in my 68 daily driver. I just replaced the head gasket on the drivers side head because of an oil leak that I am buttoning up. Fixed the leak but now after everything is installed it runs great and idles ok....but just off throttle there is a dead spot and if I crack the throttle quickly it just bogs itself down and wont regain unless I let off the throttle. Heres what I have checked firing order/timing/carb been rebuilt(was running great before all this)/vacume leaks/valves adjusted fine on the drivers side/good amount of fuel. It wasn't doing any of this before I changed out the head gasket. I am at wits end...please help! THanks guys your the best on the net!

Douglas.

How did you set your valves. to me it sounds like you have them set to tight.
back off each valve with it running til you here them rattle then give it 3/4 to a full turn more

I had fooled with the valves..setting them 1/4 turn to 3/4 turn after zero lash and still same results....my gut is telling me a vacume leak or something I missed but a second opinion on my situtation is never a bad thing. thanks

When you took it apart did you turn the carb upside down?

Nope. Sure didnt. I am running a carb spacer with gaskets that I just put on before I took the head off and ran into this problem. Carb cleaned the heck out of it.

I would think it's a vacuum leak. Since you had to replace the intake gasket I'd start down there, what did you torque the head bolts to? Adjust the valves hot or cold engine? Then I'd grab a can of WD40 and start spraying with the red tube specific areas and go from there. I'd also make sure that you don't have a pluged fuel filter. Hope this helps alittle. Good luck.

if you really soaked the heck out of the carb with carb cleaner you may want to check the power valve. Sometimes the cleaner can distort the rubber and not give the extra shot of fuel needed when you jump up off idle or try to acceleraqte.

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Let the truck idle and spray some wd or some brake cleaner in some specific areas and see if the idle pics up any. If it does you found the leak. Most likely the intake gasket slipped when you set the intake in place. It happens a lot.

Did you pinch the fuel line to the carb? Or get crud in the line that plugged the fuel filter on the carb? With the engine off and the cover off the carb watch to see if the accel pump is working and putting fuel in the carb..
