So I was thinking...
If I were to start running some new wires, and start replacing some old ones, would it be smarter to go with a bigger gauge wire in place of the factory installed stuff?

no. stay with all the factory size for factory things. if you start puting in aftermarket stuff then you might need to change the wire size, but probably not

Thanks. I'm gonna start with new taillights and headlights tomorrow, I'm sure my new testlight will get broken in really quick. Does anyone else notice that your testlights only last about 2 months?

You need a better testlight then.
My Snap-On test light is over 10 years old. I had to change the bulb once, but that's it.

The factory wiring was that size considered adequate....stay with it.
You'll find buying a harness cheaper.....consider the cost of wiring, terminals, sealing
