Gear selector indicator

I purchased a 1972 Chevy a few months back and the gear indicators do not match the gear that the truck is in. I can line up a couple on either end of the indicator by moving the lickage from the column to the transmisson. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

ASIDE FROM THE "P" , "R" , AND THE "N" HERE IS WHATS LEFT

WELL IF IT'S A POWERGLIDE IT WILL JUST HAVE A "D" AND A "L"

TURBO 350/400 WILL HAVE A "D" AND THEN A "L2" AND A "L1"

700R4 WOULD BE A SWAPPED IN UNIT "D" , "3" , "2" , AND "1"

I THINK THIS IS ALL CORRECT, KINDA TIRED AT THE MOMENT

I had the same problem. I adjusted it according to the manual and it still didn't line up. I loosened the column clamps and turned the whole column just a bit, replaced the linkage bushing at the column and transmission, and replaced the upper column bushing so that the lever wasn't as loose. Lines up fine now.

MIGHT BE THE BEST WAY TO FIX IT

The stock nontilt columns are junk. When everything wears inside, the shifter won't line up right, and it'll bind and/or be too loose...ect.
