Compressor and Tank Location

Where is the best place to mount tanks and compressors on a SWB fleet side?

I was thinking on the outside of the frame rail somewhere under the bed, possible right in front of the rear wheel well area...

any ideas? im running front and rear bags also, so if you want to suggest a tank size that would be nice also. I probably won't need a huge amount of air, just enough for one trip up. Id even be willing to fill the front, wait for a refill and fill the rears or something.

I just wouldnt put them where it would be impossilbe to get to unless the bed was off. Once your broke down in the middle of nowhere with no way to take the bed off youll think twice about hiding everything too good. Just my opinion. I plan on putting a bed cover on to keep it safe.

good point. do you think it would that difficult to work on things there?
i don't nkow, i mean its pretty open there, and things would be on the outside of the rail.... i guess i'll just have to see how things fit first... to make a final decision... the bed is a good idea though. do you plan on putting it all in some kindof a housing or just setting it all out?

I have "heard" that you can take a gas tank from like a 72 blazer and it will fit just perfect. I am just going to have it out in the bed under the cover, I just know that I am not going haul anything in my truck with a huge notch sticking up out of the bed and a bed cover. At least everything will be out of the weather therefore less chance of shorts and stuff.

This is the only other pic I have of that truck. I took these pics at SuperChevy in Baytown last summer. You might want to check with N2TRUX or STP67-72. I think they know the guy who owns this truck and could possibly get you some more info.

I would not use a Blazer tank go to a 20 gallon fuel Cell with a sending unit From Summit I think it was a 20 x 24 x 10" deep.. You will most likly have to run the filler thur the bed floor. The blazer tank hangs low and you have to cut the rear bed cross member out completely. As for the 73 up tanks they will not fit there cabs hump up to allow room for the tank to fit. I would look at putting the tanks under the box infront of the wheels like trh epic shown. They will get stoned though so mably on the outside of the frame onder the cab.

72, im a little confused by what you suggested...

Where are you suggesting i mount that summit tank? in the rear where the spare tire goes? or up under the cab?

Mounting the compressor on side of frame is pretty standard. A rock isn't going to hurt the tank. If concerned spray it with Truck bed liner. Mounting everything under the truck saves space. Be sure to select a sealed compressor. Not all are.

I'll post pictures soon, but I have two custom aluminum tanks in between frame running crosswise in the frame, and the compressor mounted on the inside of the frame rails. I will be mounting tanks under the hood, and another compressor also. I will get pictures though need to get some of my exhaust.

Those are mounted under the driver side of the cab. My exact set up won't work for you because you need to mount your gas tank where my air tanks are at.

The "best" solution to your gas tank is contact Fuelcellguy and get him to fix you up.
