I have hooker aero chamber on my 94 z 28 and it sound really good.
Louder under acceleration, and quieter with normal driving.
Deep rumble like the original musclecars sound. Good quality and affordable for
a daily driver.

I'm with Robert on this one. I've said it before, a SBC on glasspacks is a truly classic sound, as American as can be.

That 400 will be really happy if you do it right - keep the pipe diameter down, max 2.25 inches. Most think bigger is better, but if you aren't racing, that's not necessarily true. The 400 is a torque motor, and for low RPM torque and drivability, you need to keep the flow rate up.

As for the glasspacks, match the inner diameter to the pipe size, then pick your length. 30 inchers are what I'd call middle ground, drop to 18" for really nasty, move up to 40" for mellow.

Make it what you like - it's your truck.

I have a 350 with Headman Al. coated Ceramic headers with 2.5" aluminized pipes, H pipe behind the tranny/transfer and 70 series big block Flowmaster about 8" behind the H. The the exhaust exits behind the wheels like stock. Looks great and stock from behind. Almost no cab noise until you mash open the 4bll and then it roars~! It is nice to hear myself think or listen to the radio low and be able to get loud when I want unlike 40 or 50 series Flowmasters under the cab. Great sound and performance all the way around~!!!!!!

Summit's bullet style glass packs, although they are really just expansion chambers, loud and rumbly.

magnaflows give more of a turbo sound compared to flows. flows are deeper and louder
i went from flows to magnaflows back to flows.
but it depend on what ur lookin for; noise-flows; performance-magnaflows.
i noticed a considerable difference in power with the magnaflows

I am running Hooker Comp headers with 2.5" aluminized pipe with the Hooker Areo Chamber mufflers. Has the sound you described above.

I'm going with 2.5 2 chamber Flowmaster Original 40's with turndowns just behind the cab. Had them on an old ford truck and loved em.

i love my 40 series loud all the time the only complaint is that i got them tucked up where they are only about a 1/2 inch from the bottom of the cab floor and it heats up quick in the summer. not that a black truck/interior helps though. mines 3'' h-pipe flos 13/4 headers out the side

My 67 has a 350, full length headers with the exhaust (2-1/2") exiting behind the rear wheel. I went with Flowmasters Delta Series. I really like the sound.....I would go with them again.

I have Hooker Super Comps with 3" to Flow Pros (cheap flowmasters), and cross over that dump right behind the cab. I really like the sound of the Supertapps better but the exhaust fumes come into the cab. Also have a set of Flowmasters (40's) that were on about a month that I'd probably sell.

I had flow 40's but swapped to the 50 delta series, pretty much the same sound just a little less of it. I had the 40's in the vids below.

The sound will vary depending on the final setup for any given muffler. The sound is the result of the whole system. It starts with how much air flow you have out of your engine. This will vary with engine mods such as cam size, valvetrain, porting & polishing, intake type and size, carburator size, intake manifold size, ect. Once the air exits the engine the size of the header or exhaust manifold will make a difference. Then the size of pipes you use will vary the sound. Most of us don't have to deal with catalytic converters (thank god) but if a coverter is stock or free flowing the sound will vary. Then how far the air runs in the pipes will change the sound. Finally we are to the muffler. There are different chambers and construction methods which is how different brands have different sounds. After the muffler there are exhaust tips which change the sound put out by the muffler. It all works together to make the sound you end up with. I have a 350 with performer manifold, hooker headers, dual 3" pipes with dual 40 series Flowmasters which run out the back with Silvertone 18" exhaust tips. In the cab you can hear the rumble but still talk or hear the radio over them. From behind they sound awesome. Good luck with your system.

3" 3 chamber Flowmasters is what I am running on my 71.

I think I might go with some Hooker Aerochambers on my other one. Gonna throw the Cherry bomb mufflers that it has now right in the trash as soon as possible.

Magnaflow mufflers are sweet sounding but PRICEY as all heck. And IMO they sound better on newer vehicles with cats. I am a Flowmaster guy...I just love that toned sound.

daves got a good point with the header/pipe/tip combination. for a while i had the exhaust stopping right at the muffler under the cab. couldnt even talk inside but it sounded cherry.
then last week i ran em all the way back and threw on some 5" tips. the longer pipes kinda silenced em up in idle and the tips gave a nice little deep rumble and brought out my cam more.

by the way, i know your local exhaust shop wont sell magnaflows for less than $125/ea. so just to let yal know, i found em online for $65/ea last year. i was searchin for the link but came up empty. if anyones curious lemme know and ill look up my reciept

I can definetly agree with what you are saying. IMO Flowmasters sound better when they dont have any tailpipe behind the muffler. Especially on a built motor.

But if you want it "quiet" definetly have to run pipes all the way out. That is what quietens it down.

It is all an opinion thing. So best of luck on it!

I run true duals with full piping to behind the rear wheels, with a set of headers and flo pro mufflers, I love the sound. The thing sounds downright nasty when you romp on it, but when you are just cruising 50 mph or so, the windnoise is more prominant than the exhaust. Exactly the type of setup I love. I don't like droning exhaust, it can get old pretty quick, but flooring it and hearing your exhaust echo off stuff all around you and having heads turn is awesome
