Hey folks…
I’m new to this site. Looks like plenty of knowledge out there!
I’ve got an old truck that I drove every day for 3 years and that I’m planning on fixing back up. It’s a 68 Chevy CST longbed. It’s a big block truck with a non-number matching 396 in it now. The tag in the glove box says it was an original 396 but it has been replaced. What are other things to look for when trying to determine if it’s a factory big block truck?
Anyway, my question to you guys is can I use a chassis from a 69 Chevy pickup? My frame under the 68 is tweaked (I’m guessing that’s when they replaced the motor) from an accident and I have an opportunity to pick up a free 69’ Chevy truck. My intentions are to fix up the 69 chassis (upgrade to 5 lug disc brakes, lowering kit, etc…) then swap over the sheet metal. Are there any major problems when doing this?
Also, can I use a set of late model (91 chevy aluminum 6-lug) wheels to roll around the chassis in the meantime? Is the 6 lug bolt pattern the same?
Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Welcome! You can use the 69 frame.

Does it sit up in the air like it should. If it was orignally a sb and somebody put in the bb and didn't change front springs it would sag in the front. If it doesn't sag too much and doesn't look like springs have been changed then thats another check mark. I don't know if the fuel line was the same size for bb and sb. I know 307 69's had a 5/16ths gas line, which is what my truck originally had. Does it have a bb transmission hump? I think all big block 2wd's have the big hump in the cab. We put one in my 69.

As far as I can tell, the truck sits slightly below level. Maybe below level because it's 34 years old on the same old springs?
I think it has the big floor hump. It has a TH-400 in it.
The glovebox ID shows that it came with a 396 and it has one now...I guess that's all that matters. It doesn't bother me that the numbers don't match.

Yep...free 69. The sheetmetal is toast....at least what's left of it.
The frame is in remarkably good shape considering how rough the cab is. Those frames are super thick.
