One of the straps holding up my gas tank broke. it has a fat dent in it too, so I was just thinking about using one of the steel replacement tanks. Has anyone installed one? Got any tips? are they an exact replacement? I want to buy one of the kits, but want to find out more before I spend 250 bucks.

The filler neck part of the tank is not exactly the same as stock... a little bit shorter, so plan on replacing the rubber filler hose with a new, longer one. Other than that, it's a straight swap.

p.s. you'll probably want to replace all of the 5/16" vent hose while you have the tank out... and be prepared to find out that all the hard lines for the vent system are rusted out...

I got mine at The Truck Shop in California, comes with everything you need for $166. Looks just like stock with the shorter filler neck so they can be used for Suburbans or Blazers

I just installed one I purchased from the Truck Shop also. Everything is straight forward except the filler neck which is shorter and not bent to go around the frame/body mount. Like mentioned above, you'll need a longer fuel hose because of this. My concern is that you really need to bend the hose at the fuel neck around the frame/body mount and it touches, I'm wondering if it will rub through over time. I bought fuel hose with the wire running through it so it won't colapse when bent.

I have the old straps still, if you want to just replace the broken one let me know, you can have for shipping.

Where does every one get the hose. I had trouble matching it up and had to make due.

thanks for the link and the offer on the straps. My tank looks like it was dropped on a rock so i will probably replace it with the complete kit.

I apologize for butting in but I posted a Blazer tank question on the 67-72 side and got no reply.
Wanting to get the tank out of my 69 GMC and install a Blazer tank in back.
Found a Blazer DEISEL tank. Will it be any different than the gas tank?

Gas hose can be had at most parts stores. Its very hard and has a really tuff metal band inside of the rubber. Comes in different sizes and prices. I think most places sell it by the inch. Think I paid 6 bucks an inch the last time I got it. Raybucks has replacement gas tanks and straps. They also sell the sending units.

My experience on the gas hose is that the auto part stores do not sell the correct size. You will need 1 3/8" hose if you want the correct size. I ended up going to a rubber distributor in town, look in your yellow pages. Ended up with 1 3/8" hose for marine applications, meaning it has the wire inside to keep it from collapsing and the rubber is better spec than automotive applications. It was $6 or $7 per foot.

I pulled my tank today. all my vent lines look good, but my tank is beat. Looks like it's been dropped on a rock once or twice. I'm thinking about having a local radiator shop swap the filler neck from the old tank to the new. I'm curious 71jimmy did you paint your tank before install? I want to clean up the underside of my bed but don't have time. but I think I will atleast paint the tank if it needs it. I will show pics of my project on wednesday.
