396 with 3 speed
I have a chance to get a 396 but I still have my 3 speed columnn (std) in my truck. I plan on changing it to a m22 or a richmond 5 but was wondering was there ever this option before that I will be able to even attempt it? I was wondering on the "z" bar and headers mainly.
I don't use my truck often but I do still will need it and don't want it sitting for too long. I am looking if anyone can get me some pics of their setup and suggest any type of headers I could use. I'm not into the resto so aftermarket parts will be great. I already have an idea for mounts(someone posted a set on here not too long ago) but have doubts on that 3 speed working until I blow it up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Headers to fit around a column shifter.........I would doubt that. It's just to odd of a combination. If you tried to use some for an automatic to clear the shift linkage (I'm still not sure it would) then you would probably run into the clutch linkage down lower. If you used some for a stick truck, the shift linkage will probably be in the way.
You might get by with some "shorty headers" and having pipes bent at a muffler shop....or use iron manifolds. That 3speed won't last long though.......either way |

The ss396 velles used a heavy duty version of the 3spd. Has double bearings on everything inside. Also chevelles used a tail tranny mount not the bellhousing mounts like these trucks. SS396s were floorshift as well. I had a 68 SS396 3spd console shift, all factory. Took apart the 3spd once, it only had a book showing the normal saginaw tranny, followed pretty close other then the double rows of bearings inside.

I don't mind switching to a floor shifter but once I spend on BB then a shifter will have to wait. I know the BB will explode the 3 speed but a tremec TKO is a bit pricey and I have another debate with Tremec TKO v. Richmond 5! OH the agony of choices! Thanks for the insite. I guess I'll keep looking!

I came across a 396 3 speed on tree 3/4 ton 2wd once for sale...they were available that way.

is the TKO the one In the 90's mustangs cuz i heard that the mustang 5 speeds are POS when it comes to powerful engines

the t5 and 3550 are the POS trannies. Apparently the TKO I/II and TKO 500/600 are improved with larger gears. That's the read on them. I don't have one in my truck or know of anyone.
