I thought all 2 tones where with white.... what i am trying to figure out is the paint scheme on my truck accurate? look and tell me what you think? i've seen a few Chevies with a dark green body and a light green cab top. GMC's may have had a different scheme.

I didn't find that number in my 72 Chev data book but did find it in my 70 Chev data book..not GMC, but this may be applicable.

Paint code Option number #556

Was a custom 2 tone paint.

With paints that have # in front of the number it references you to a chart that say's

"Same as conventional two-tone but dark tone of main color used as secondary color."

So in your case #556 is a main color of medium olive with a dark olive secondary.

White stripe would have been the option D89 if you wanted to know that also.

I'd say the scheme is correct. Looks original to me.

as for two tones..there are 3 different versions.

1. Conventional two tone. all secondary two tone body colors are white unless ordered as a cowl model or the trucks white to begin with.

2. Special two tone paint involved the option of BX2..the lower molding on fleetside equipped truck. Your truck has that option but because of the option number you listed, yours is correct. The lower molding was an option in your scheme or this scheme pattern. For yours to be in the Special Two Tone catagory it would of had the white paint secondary color.

3. Custom two-tone. Same as conventional two-tone but dark tone of main color used as secondary color. Thats what yours is. You also have the added BX2 lower molding option.

If the paint code number you listed was in a catagory with a little star beside it , that would have meant the secondary color was black.

You could order it anyway you wanted too most any time anyway.

But to answer the question of if it's the correct pattern as listed on the glove box option sheet I'd say, Yes.

Thanks... It puzzled me as the interior has been refreshed black ala rattle can... I haven't seen any that have the dark on the roof... I don't really care for it as is... will probably go with a solid or 2tone with white and another color.... we'll see as i get closer to that point...

With the paint scheme you have your interior should have been black. And that stainless piece around the back of the cab is the other piece in your paint scheme pattern also.

Looks like it was black by the glove box interior and whats under the clear portion of the glove box sticker.

I came up with a PPG number for ya. Code 556 is a 2 tone using code 2097 (504)medium olive as the body color and code 2207 (506)dark olive as the 2 tone color...

Talking What a board!!!

Join, ask a difficult question and SHAZAAM!!! All the answer one could have expected and then some!!!! all within a 24 hour period... what a resource,,,,

Thanks all!!! I thought when I bought it that the paint was original, but as I fix things I find interior under door panels shows a shade of green that looks different from the body... a lil differnt under the floor pad when replacing a dimmer switch... but close enuff to have chalked up to oxidation...

A friend told me it was probably a repaint as It was backwards with a dark top and he didn't think they made 2 tones w/o the white... then doubt and over the past 2 years I haven't seen another original 2-tone with anything other than a white top...

I guess I'll have to look the colors up to see what the look like, or maybe keep it close and jazz it up a wee bit.... although a white roof may work better in the summer... who knows, just trying to figure it out before I need to decide (months from now...) Well I have a few other mechanicals to work on and some door patch panels to order and install first... ugh but hey I bet it'll be beter than trying to hang rear quarter panels!!!

I am still amazed this was zapped out so quick.. I figured I'd have a week or more to get some of the info and then I'd have to research the color numbers.... whew, you guys do the work for me too? Nah, that'd take the fun out of it... but sure would be easier and probably turn out better too!!!

Thanks

Gary

I have what's left of a '72 chevy parts cab, and it's got that colour scheme as well (as far as I can tell)... Dark metallic green roof, and I guess medium olive main color (even inside the cab... it's a bit brighter/yellower than the pic you posted)... it has the lower moulding as well, but I can't tell what color was down there (it was resprayed). I think it's a nice color combo, and definately would stand out against all the regular two-tones out there.

Usually the 2nd color in a 2 tone was white. But you could order the truck with any of the colors that were offered at the time. Here is a pic of a chevy with the same 2 colors as your truck...

72 Custom Camper..your truck color scheme falls in the special two-tone catagory.

Your option number is 588 for the paint scheme. Your Cheyenne or Z84 option made it have the paint that way.

Medium olive and white is code 534.
Medium olive and dark olive top is code 588.
Medium olive and dark olive secondary top and bottom is code 556.

Dark olive with the white stripe is 564 like you said.

I see what happened. The PPG color chart has code 534 and code 588 listed as the same colors...
