el camino rear bumper?

Hi guys,
I was thinking of changing my rear bumper to a late 70's early 80's elcamino bumper. It has back up lights inserted into the bumper which would help my truck comply with UK lighting laws and look relatively stock. Has anyone tried this before? Do they fit?
I'm running a stepside...

Cheers
Lee

that's what i was thinking of doing to mine...you can also find them on malibu wagons late 70's early 80's
I was going to cut a section out of the center to shorten it to fit my step side

maybe even a 67-72 bumper and I'll replace the red lamps with white/clear back up lamps.

UK law is that direction indicators must be amber or clear lens with an amber bulb. I currently have late 70 el camino lamps cut into my rear bumper but wanted to go for a more stock look by fitting the original stepside lamps (stop and back up (converted to turn signal) to the bed) and fit the 68-72 el camino bumper with clear back up lamps so that I still retain a stock look and keep back up lamps. I dont want any fool running into me in the parking lot!!

The 68-72 just has a small single lamp either side of the license plate opening. The late 70's 80's has the whole cluster containing stop turn relfector and back up lamp (about 8 inches long if memory serves). I currently have these and they work fine but I would like to change them.

Cheers

I would just get some small round white lights or oval white, cut hole in bumper and wire them up. I had a 78 stepside and used the oval ones for stop/turn and the round ones for backup lights, you can get chrome trim rims for them also. They have a grommet around them and the last forever. Not exactly what you are looking for but might give you some more ideas.

Been done by a few on the board here. Some kept it the stock size (first pict) will others shorted it to fit the step side better (2nd pic) It's fairly easy to mock up brackets. I have one (3rd pic) that I planned on using for my 70, but I found a step bumper that I might go with instead. Good look, they do look sharp on these truck.

FWIW, I use to have an '81 El Camino. After being rear ended I went looking for another bumper. What I found was that bumper was very popular with Chevrolet and was used on sedans, station wagons and El Caminos. For some reason the wire harness was different but the bumpers and mounts were the same. So if you're looking for a bumper of this style, don't limit your search to just "El Camino". As I recall, a few of the other GM cars used the same or pretty close to the same bumper as well.

thanks guys my mistake (initial typo) . I have a late 70's on the truck at the moment the one with the long lamp cluster in it.

I am thinking of putting on a late 60's early 70's so I guess it will still fit, right?

Cheers

Don't some of these have plate brackets?
Anyone mount one on a fleetside?

The Elcamino and Station Wagon are the only ones with the tail lights in the bumper. The sedans have the lights on the body.

I have a 84 Elcamino SS if anyone needs pics of this bumper.
