Disc Brake Conversion

I finally got around to putting my disk brakes on my 14 bolt FF. I was going to put it in the 83 but now I have decided to put it in the 91 burb I just got. This little project was alot less trouble than I thought it was going to be. I got the plans for the brackets off of e-bay but I modified them a little so they would be stronger and safer in my eyes. I made them at work and they were laser cut on our new Mazak laser.

I've been wanting to do this conversion for years now! Looks good. How thick is the spacer between the caliper bracket and axle flange? If ya don't mind me askin'.
What are ya gonna use for a master cylinder/ prop valve?

No the ebrake will have to be removed, but with the auto I wont need them any way. Indiana dosnt require you to use them.

The calipers and rotors were sorced from a '75 3/4 ton. I just went to Auto Zone and asked for the parts to a '75 3/4 ton truck front and they put them on the counter, they are the same ones used on the front axle.

The brackets are made out of 3/8 A36 steel and the spacers from 3/4 steel, The plans called for peices of pipe to be cut to 3/4 in length but I didnt think that they would be strong enough so I made my own spacers. I am just going to use the stock master cylinder and lines, I will be reroughting the lines on the axle to use rubber lines as on the front axle.

The Auto Zone Numbers I bought were:

2 @ 716779 5523 567 Brake Rotor $23.99 each

1 @ 095745 C503 Disk Brake Caliper $15.99

1 @ 095752 C502 Disk Brake Caliper $15.99

The number came from my receipt and they told me that that particular rotor is not going to be a stock item and when the supply is gone they will be gone. I am sure they will replace them with another brand.

i'd need them for a half ton though....12 bolt rear

do they give you the plans for the spacers as well?....how exactly did you modify your spacers?..

i'd have to take the plans to a local machine shop..

My brakes where done with the original backing plate , rotors and calipers from the front. A notch has to be cut in the backing plate and holes drilled. There is also a spacer. I have the size for the spacer or I can get them. I have always had this info but noone has ever contacted me for it.

The guys that came up with this conversion got all the info from a article in one of the 4x4 mags. They used a magnifing glass to get the part numbers off the parts in the article. I thought that was pretty funny. The only thing this one lacks is the ebrake and it can be had but very expensive from what I have found. Myself I never use a ebrake with a auto, but someone using a standard would have to have something.

Oh, and I'm not trying to steal bussiness or the thread. The 14 bolt ff is pretty easy.

Yea, that's the way I want to do mine cause I've already got the backing plates and a set of calipers for cores when the time comes.
I know the holes have to be drilled in the backing plate but this is the first I've heard of a notch. What's the notch for?
Also if ya could, the thickness of the spacer would be appreciated.

Not to steal the thread.. But 454 72 4x4 I think I have a set of aluminum spacers from an older kit, before I went to work for blackbirds..
I was only going to ask 60. plus shipping.
If your interested, i can take a look for them.. I know mudder has seen them in previous for sale threads I have made..

I would however ask you guys to do what soleeagle did.. Use a thick spacer instead of the pipe spacers..
I have seen first hand the pipe spacers break and twist under a set of 39 boggers hard braking..

I would offer our kits to you guys, but we don't just sell the brackets..

Dumb question; why doesn't blackbird sell just the brackets? Is there that much markup on the calipers? I'd think he'd sell alot more quantity if he'd sell just the parts people need. (IMHO)

Yup I remember. no big deal..

Easiest to answer that one is we just chose not to sell them seperately..
We found out that there were different rotors (different thicknesses) for sale.Which we found out brought on stress on the bracket. So instead of making 2 different brackets we went one type of rotor that matched what we had. We could see a potential for someone to try and sue us if their bracket broke if they installed it wrong. this way with everything we sell together we know it works..
So it became a liability issue for us..


Plus there are alot of folks that don't have or can't find a machinest or want to deal with a parts store to build a kit.

I used the lugs from the back.

a ton of places sell the brackets for those of you that don't have access to equipment to machine them. price is usually from 50-75 for a set and then you just need the 3/4 ton front rotors and calipers and break lines
