Q for trucks with Blazer fuel cells? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Love the idea of putting a Blazer fuel cell under my frame and getting that potential fire-ball out of the cab.

But what do you do about a spare? Just throw it in the bed? Or mount somewhere (in bed? on front of truck...seen farmers who do that...thought it was pretty cool when I was a kid).

Hmmmm...

Does anyone make fuel cells that ride inside the frame rails and in front of the rear axle? I'm not a huge fan of the saddle bag cells.

Mine went to the bed after my tank change,going to find a trick mount to set it on the side frame of the bed - lock it in place and then put a nice tire cover over it. Hanging one off the front bumper works as you see them all the time on as you said farmers rigs but something just bugs me about covering up the air flow to the radiator. As far as inside the frame gas tanks most all new trucks come with those and have for many years now so a careful search of the junk yards my turn up something you can use. I installed a 38gal tank in the rear frame out of a mid 80s Suburban along with the body fuel door which is now on the pass. side. HTH::::COBRO

I do not plan to run a spare tire once my truck is done.
I'll have a small 'space saver' type for road trips

If I remember right you purchased a long bed.
There is a cool mod you can do, take a bed wheel well, and mount it upside down right in front of the wheel well, so it is sunk into the bed. It will drop the tire enough so it doesn't stick over the bed side, but it won't hang below the bed either. If you do it, be sure to put holes in the bottom to let water drain.

dont mean to hijack your thread but i think ur more likely to get rearended than Tboned and start a fire just my .02

If you get t-boned hard enough to rupture your in-cab tank and cause an explosion, you'll never know it

Valid reasons for moving it IMO are leg room or additional stowage. If you smell gas, you probably have a bad o-ring around the sending unit or have over-filled the tank and it's sloshed out the filler.

The real reason the tank was moved in 73 had nothing to do with safety...think factory crew cabs.

Given the expense and inconvenience involved don't do it under the pretext of safety. They make Volvo's for that

To address you question, from what I've read, most don't carry a spare, or toss it in the bed only on longer trips. There was an optional in-bed spare mount in these trucks which might address you needs.

I don't carry a spare. I guess I could for trips, but haven't. I'd also need my floorjack and a crossbow. I do like having the extra room in th cab, and with my later model bench seat, I like being able to tip the back of the seat forward to expose the stuff I keep back there.

I kept a can of fix-a-flat in glove box. Haven't use it on the truck,but have seen it in action. Pay a few extra $$'s for the large can. Its works.

Maybe you call it a 4 way? You know, the thing you use to remove and replace lug nuts when you're not by your shop with air tools.

if you don't wanna carry a spare, at least carry a can of fix-a-flat, and for more ammo, carry a small air comp. and a tire plug kit. if you are running air bags you could install a quick connect and a air hose to get ya out of a bind without carrying another air comp. i've seen pics of the recessed wheel well modification but i can't find the pics. it was inverted in the left front corner of the bed with a 1/2" hole drilled in the bottom to let water out. i'm gonna have this setup in mine and i want it to sit low enough to put a hardcover over.
