Flexplate two piece main to one.....

I have a question about my turbo 350 in my 84 C10. I'm installing a 87 350c.i. and of course it has the one piece main seal. The flex plates (the one on the 82 305) are the same Diameter (168 tooth). I know the 86 and newer are externally balanced and the older one is internally balanced. I'm using the correct externally balanced flexplate. I have the motor in w/4 bolts right now ( two top block bolts and motor mount bolts). I crawled under it and The flexplate seems to be pinched on the torque converter. I thought I could spin the torque converter to line it up but no. I had the converter off to replace the front seal while in there and I did spin the converter until it clicked on. Could I not have the converter all the way on??

you shouldn't have an external balance flexplate on a 350! but thats probly not why your having problems, you TC probly isn't seated right. but if you crank that thing up with an external balance flexplate get ready for some vibes

If you had placed a straight edge across the face of the bell housing before installation in the truck , the converter should have been "about" 1/2 inch or more behind the straight edge . If you found a way to start it without the converter being seated you will shear the ears on the pump almost instantly . With the transmission installed the converter should be able to slide away from the flex plate at least 1/4 inch , and it should slide easily . Also keep in mind when installing a converter , there is a bushing in there that can get damaged with rough installation .

Rrrrnnnnnhhhhh! Wrong. When GM went to 1-piece rear main seals in 1986, they also went to an externally balanced flexplate. Yes, the old 2-piece rear seal cranks were internally balanced. Not only did the seals change in 1986, so did the crankshaft bolt pattern.

Talking to a buddy @ work and were discussing the converter install. When I installed it, it clicked once and slid back. He was saying it should click twice to slide all the way on. Luckily I didn't hook anything else up and tomorrow I will pop the motor and check it out again. I don't believe I have damaged anything yet. I didn't put the bolts in to draw the tranny to the motor. It already aligned w/the pins when the motor was going in.

Yep the converter wasn't clicked in twice. I was able to pull the motor up and forward enough to pop it all the way on. Thanks for the advise.

Have another question though. I bought a set of Headman hedders for the truck. Now remember that my truck is an 84 c10 that was origionally a 6cyl. Now has a v8. The dang hedders on the passenger side hit some fuel/brake lines that for some reason come outside the frame rails. I'm gonna have to pull the motor again and pull the frame motor mount, remove the bracket and bend the fuel/brake lines back up against the frame. Lots of work. I can't believe they run those lines outside the protection of the frame there. What a PITA. Should be done tomorrow if it doesn't snow that bad..
