rear drum question

hope i dont get in trouble for posting this in two spots but there just isnt anyone over at the 60-66 board and im betting someone here can answer this question. my brother is chomping at the bit trying to figure this out.

he called me tonight and wanted to know how to take the rear drums off his 66 or maybe its a 65 long step. i think this is a half ton truck. he told me 4 guys were looking at it and none of them could figure it out. is there some trick to removing these?

After you remove the wheel and then slide out the axle, there are some locknuts holding the drum and bearings in place. There is a special tool to remove them but a scewdriver and hammer should work also. Hope this helps....John

CG, The drums on a 60-66 are almost the same as a 67-68. The rear axles are also almost the same. 60-66 has a slightly shorter rear axle. I would not be suprised if a 67-68 drum would fit on a 60-66 axle. To answer your question, the only thing that I can think of is that the drums are grooved and the brake shoes are keeping them from coming off. If the adjuster is not frozen, a brake adjuster tool will move the adjuster in enough so that the brake shoes will clear the drums. I also hope that this helps. Kevin
