Talking Summit exhaust kit for our trucks.

Hey everybody, I just found this over on summits website, its a complete exhaust system for our trucks, minus the mufflers. They have header kits, hok-16522-hkr and manifold kits as well. Just enter your truck's info and the kits will pop up.

When I get to this stage of my build, I will probably use the header kit.

Very cool, thanks for the link!
At first I was disappointed that it was only 2 1/4" but then I realized since it is mandrel bent it would still flow better than my crushbent 2 1/2" system.

Hmmmm, it says it exits "split side".

After taking a good look at the pic it looks like it goes over the axle and
then exits at a 45 near the bumper similar to stock.

Anyone ever installed one? $135 seems pretty resonable.

I bought the kit and the headers, and I had some problems with the fit. Summit was willing to take it back, but I took it all down to the local Midas shop and one of the guys fixed me up on his own time. My neighbor said there was no way I was going to get the quality locally for the price I had paid, so just added a few more $$ and had that one custom fit.

How much modification was needed for this kit to work on your truck?
My local exhaust guy is a total idiot. Where did you exit your pipes?

Same here, I ordered headers from Summit and they "nearly" fit, it was $125 to have the left one modified to complete the fit and for that price I wasn't going to bother with a return and trying a different header. I have (what I believe is) a stock 402 with A/C and automatic trans truck and I got the HED-69110 part number in case anyone is wondering what worked for me $135 + free shipping (mighta been a special?) and $125 to modify the left one slightly at the muffler shop was still an allright price for good headers.

The headers were fine, I think I bought the supercomp. There was one piece, first piece off the header, that had the wrong angle in it, which through everything behind it out of whack. The rest of the bends were okay up over the axle and out the sides behind the tires, like stock. I also went fron single to duals, so he added a hanger or two for me.

JC whitney has the kit with the cheap turbo mufflers that exit before the back tires for like 120.00

I wish I could find a mandrel-bent, single-pipe exhaust system for a "71 K10 w/350 and Rams Horn manifolds with no muffler supplied–all for that price or better. I'm still looking at making mine with mandrel-bent pieces.

I called them to make sure it would fit, but it will only fit long frames, not short.

I installed the JC Whitney kit on my dad's truck a couple of years ago. If I remember right there are some straight runs that could easily be cut down for a SWB application. No promises but I don't see why not.

The kit I received was for stock application to stock manifolds exiting out the sides behind the rear wheels. Seems like no matter how I configured the peices, I could not get it to fit well with out the exit pips actually angling up. If I would have pointed them down, they would have hung way too low. and I couldn't hang the pipes any higher due to the bend over the rear axle. Just bought some turndowns and slapped em on the end. Also fully welded the joints instead of using the clamps. Other than the aesthetics on the exit, I was happy for the price.

Well, I called a few places and this is what I have found, so far.

Jegs - No compatible kits.
Summit - No compatible kits.
JC Whiteney - No campatible kits.

I started seeing a pattern, so not believing these reseller guys I instead called
a manufacturer. Most dont accept calls but Hooker does. It ends up that Hooker
does have kits that are built for the short frame 71 chevy. Part number
16621HKR for use with stock manifolds, and 16522HKR for use with their
headers (2452HKR).

BTW - summit does carry these part numbers online.

So now I get to decide if I want to keep the stock manifolds, or go with
headers. Oh the trials of a chevy owner...

You know what, strike that. I went onto Hookers site and it showed for
long base only. So I called Hooker back. Those kits are only for long base.

But I think your right J.Lance, the long base should be able to be
shortened pretty easily.

LMC claims in their catalog that "their" exhaust systems can be cut down at the straight sections to use on a shortbed. I have no experience with their kits or shortbeds.
