I'm sure it can be done, but why?

If you want a real 4x4, go solid axles. Just my humble opinion.

opinions, opinions....

i am recently purchasing a 65 gmc factory crew cab. i don't like taking the easy route and have something everyone else can easily do. so i thought a newer ifs chasis, a duramax/allison and 35's or 38's would really rock. just wanted to see if anyone has ventured out there first and has some do's and don'ts. i understand the idea of keeping it old school....but thats the fun of technology. killer looks of early iron with the ride and drive quality of new stuff sounds great. thanks for the opinions though. thats what makes this sport great. if we all had the same rigs, how boring would that be.

1968vetL-71 is right. I just put an ifs 4x4 frame under my 70 GMC. New technology, old iron looks. My GMC started as a 2wd. Lots of fabrication, but it's almost on the road again.

i dont think i quite worded my first reply right. putting an IFS chassis under your truck would be shooting yourself in the foot. IFS truck ride like crap, they're hard on parts, and expensive to lift. if you want to run 38s, forget it. your parts bill will drive you to the poor house. i'm not opposed to new powerplants, and new trannys/cases. IFS absolutely blows, trust me, i drive one of those pieces of crap every day.

I used a 1988 lwb. I set the bed on the frame, and had to raise the cab to meet it. It looks lifted, but it's all body lift. I left the entire drive train stock. It's still in progress, but everything on the body will also be stock.
Here are some pics. The side view of the truck outside is what it looked like when I started.

thats weird, my last 98 on 38's rode and drove like a dream. when it comes to a project like this, you can't put a price on building it. if you want the run of the mill look maybe. but i guess thats my opinion.

i noticed the copper colored 70's crew cab that pops up once in a while on a thread is IFS, wow, thats 2 crazy nuts that think alike.

agreed, you cant put a price on building a good classic truck, but you can prevent yourself from wasting money.

I also agree. I specifically found an ifs just to convert my truck to 4x4. New technology. I probably could have gone with solid axle. It would have been easier if I had found and used something older, with the solid axle, but I wanted a better ride and more important better gas milage.

i've been driving an IFS 4x4 truck every day for the past 2 years, and have owned 3 solid axle 4x4s. you are headed entirely the wrong direction if you're looking for a good ride. as for milage my IFS truck with a TBI 350 3.42 gears and a 700R4 gets around 14-15 mpg, whereas my '77 K20 w/ carbed 350/TH350 and 4.10s gets 12 mpg with a 7.5' snow plow on the front.

This has a 350 carbed/TH350. I don't know what kind of gas milage I'm going to get. I've driven both straight axle, and ifs. My opinion, ifs has the better ride. The main reason for the conversion is to have something no one else has. IFS under old iron. I know what direction I was going.

i guess this headed down the wrong road. all i was wanting was some info if anyone had done this before. it turned into people bashing and criticizing other peoples rides. for those who want something different we look for ways to do it. if we want a normal stock 4x4 then we would do that also. we need to help support the hobby of restoring and customizing not condemn them for branching out and trying something off the wall. thanks for the opinions and i'll start to post some pics when i figure out which direction i'm going. ( hmm, maybe put it on a 2wd chassis and slam it with some 20's and air ride.)

I think its great what you are doing. I don't really think your are being slammed as much as its an argument over old/new. The copper colored extended cab is pretty cool. The main thing is to do what u want with your money......

i would have to agree that ifs trucks ride better, my 88 would soak up bumps that any of my live axle trucks buck and groan about. the 88 was a light duty 3/4 and all of my live axle trucks have been 3/4 ton or 1/2 ton with lift springs, so that doesn't help the ride. i would personally never put IFS under anything, but good luck and let us see some pics

git r dun , gotta hand a guy credit that is attempting something that not many people are willing to try and do , i say good deal , me and a buddy are planning the same in the future with his dads old 72 4wd , its different , i personally think that the ultimate daily would be a 67-72 sittin on a lte model ifs frame with all the vortec stuff or really make it fun and do an ls1 , i think that would make a super sweet driver ,, sure the ifs isnt the strongest ,, if your lookin for total bullet proof you could go with a dna 60 and fugetaboutit , but you gotta give and take , figure out what will work best for you anbd your plans for the truck , if they guy wants ifs with 35 inch tires and his main plan is to cruise it to work , groceries ect and the ocasional muddy field bash or and then drive it back home 100 miles i say go for it , id love to see pics along the way!!!
