Need advise on buying a 71 4x4

I'm considering buying a 71 4x4 but concerned I might be biting off more than I can chew. Here is a link to the truck:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT

The first thing I noticed is the VIN doesn't match, starts with a C rather than a K. I asked the seller and he spoke to the person who he purchased it from (yea, one of those). The one who had it said it has a "part-time kit for the transfer case". Can someone explain what he is referring to?

BTW I know nothing about 4x4s.

Any information is really appreciated.

Thanks.

It apears to be a converted truck. It has a BB,not stock on 67-72 4x4.It also has a np203 transfercase, which is not stock. The 203 was a full time 4x4 case. There are kits to make them part time.

It has no inner fenders. For that kind of money you should be able to find a nice original 4x4, not some home-built mutt. Dont' walk, run away from this one.

i think he is refering to the 203 transfer case, it originaly was a full time 4x4 case, no 2wd. there is a kit you can buy and install and and convert it to a part time 4x4, witch gives you 2wd, saves wear and tear on the truck, front tires, and saves gas..
btw a 203 never came out in a 67-73 its a 73 and up xcase.
i would really think weather or not to buy this truck, looks to me like a put togeather from about 5-6 trucks.
does he include the front inner fenders??as i didn`t see them on the truck.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. I have some reservations which is why I posted this, especially since I'm not familar with 4x4s. I asked him about the inner fenders as well, ad says new ones but none there???

Thanks again for any and all replies.

It really depends on what you are looking for. I watched e-bay for months looking for a truck. I didn't want anything that was too much of a "mutt." Things that scare me about this truck are
  • Missing inner fenders (although the ad says have them)
  • primer paint...never know what's under that primer...lots of bondo?
  • No shots of the floor boards / rockers / cab corners / cab supports. Those are trouble spots for this year of trucks
  • lift kit. generally it's okay, but when this person is stating you can't get stuck in this truck...well, he's obviously tried!

There are some good things in the posting. The 396 sounds stout and well built (I'm assuming). Not a huge fan of the late model bed, but some like things like that. Buckets are nice, if that's your thing.

I agree with some previous posts...I would run away. But if this is what you are looking for...

BTW, I paid $3,500 for my truck. It's a mutt, made from C20 and K20. But I can see all the rust, know people who have known the PO for 20 years and know his tendencies when doing resto work.

I think you can find better trucks out there that are less messed up. Be patient and find what you are looking for.

I fully agree with CPNE here. You can find a real nice 4X4 for half of that.

Of course thats just my .02 and I live in a totally different area.

Did the high bidder back out, or are you the high bidder?
