You can't be Andy...I'M ANDY!!!
LOL. just messing.
It really all depends on the budget and what you want out of it. I am always pushing the chevy vortecs. Best bang for the buck out there. They out do EVERY G.M. casting ever made for small blocks, so messing with vintage heads seems kinda stupid IMO...onless originality is a concern anyways.

Well, in theory, you'd be better off doing it all at once, and making it all a package that works together.
A 'good' head for a 350, may be too small for a 383, while this also works in reverse too, good head for a 383 could be too much for a 350.
In reality, you could do it and probably not have any problems at all. However, when you go to do the 383 build up, you'll need to keep an eye on your compression, I believe the vortecs may be a little small in cc's, which could put you up over the pump gas range if you are not carefull.
Just a note, why kill a 400 just for it's crank, when you could build up the 400 for 1/2 the cost of the 383? The 400 will make gobs more torque, and like I said, it is cheaper. The old tales of running hot and all that crap don't hold watter (no pun intended) if you do it all properly.
But that is just my opinion.

I dont know if anyone is killing 400's for their cranks any more. The cost of one plus the extra machinework to turn it down to 350 bearing size will put you WAY over the $129 SCAT is getting for their new manufacture 350 bearing sized 3 3/4 inch stroker cranks.

383's need dished pistons to work with the 64 cc vortecs. Keith Black makes them .

Next time someone asks you if you want to sell that crank ...

a. sell it to them for $129 then buy yourself a new one.

b. tell them the real deal.

Yes, you are living in the golden age of crankshafts my friend. It just doesnt make sense to use OEM crankshafts any more. You can buy a brand spanking new 383 grind crank for $129 . 400 journal cranks are the same price. You can even get an internally balanced 383 crank that uses 6 inch rods for $205. That is a screaming deal! Brand new 4340 steel nitrided 350 cranks are selling for right around $300 these days. I remember building a motor in high school in 1980 that I had to work 2 months to be able to afford to buy a used steel crank, have it ground, indexed and nitrided. I still have that crank BTW. Those days are gone!

Its not only cranks. Rods that Bill Jenkins could only dream of in the 70's are selling for $200 a set new in the box. The local shops wanted $120 just to resize my stock rods not to mention another $140 if I wanted them bronze bushed and the cost of ARP bolts. I said screw it and bought some 4340 steel heavy H beam Scat rods with 12 point capscrews that will handle 600 HP all damned day and only paid $250.

I wont even get into what you can get for aftermarket and OEM heads these days. Having "camel hump" heads rebuilt is an exercise in stupidity!

I just wish someone would come out with some inexpensive standard nbore heavy duty blocks.

I agree 100%.
I neer bother pricing any internals...I have honestly yet to dig in too far on an engine. $$ restrictions have been a life style for me.
The 400 is already sold. Since I got the Caddy motor, it was just a 400 hogging up room.

Im runnin 70 cc chamber edelbrock rpm heads on my flattop 383. at 170cc intake runner sizing , they arent the biggest head on the market, but work well as far as tork & throttle responce in a 4000# truck. virtual dyno puts the combo @ 385-390 hp@ 5250,& about 440 tork @ 3500,but pulls over 400ft lb from 2500-5000 rpms. hooked to a 400T /TCI breakawy verter,& 4.10 gears, she puts the first 2 gears in tire smoke, with the @ss scootin around on 2 lanes of pavement(need some BFG dot's)......

a head with an intake runner of 180 will be fine for both a 350 and a 383..you can get dart iron eagles for just under 600.00..they will out perform vortecs and are CHEAPER, unless you have a vortec intake manifold and valve covers and self aligning rockers..the Darts are a direct bolt on..just my humble opinion
