a/c questions

Ok guys i have been away for some time doing motorcycle stuff. I need to get back on my old truck. Has anyone use factory truck a/c parts from newer models like 83-87 trucks or anything else? My truck is being fitted with a late 90's vortec tbi motor and front acc's so i will have a late model compressor to start with. Or would it be better to get a under dash unit (don't want to cut into dash) and plumb it to the new compressor? I have friends with truck salvage yards here local so any later model stuff I can use the better. Thanks for your help. It's good to be back.
