72 trim package - black vs. woodgrain
I have a '72 Custom Camper 3/4 ton 4x4 which I purchased last fall. I had the truck appraised and the appraiser said the body trim at the beltline should be wood grain not the black which is on my truck. My tailgate insert is woodgrain but all of them are (at least all I've seen and I've never seen any other finish available in catalogs). I have a code identification book for these trucks but it only refers to the trim package but doesn't say whether it should be black or woodgrain. My truck isn't original so not having the "correct" trim level is not imperative but I was wondering if it should have the wood grain finish. Is this only for the Cheyene or Super packages? Mine is neither. Thanks for the help. My first post - love this site!

The 90/10 rule says your truck is correct with the black trim. The woodgrain was usually reserved for Cheyenne models. I have seen the tailgate insert piece with the black background IIRC. If yours is woodgrain, it's probably an add-on.

My custom deluxe highlander has the wood trim on the sides (original) but not sure what it had on the tailgate originally, as when I bought it the tailgate wasn't original.

I heard from somewhere that if the truck has upper trim then the lower was supposed to be woodgrain.Don't know how true that is but I was told that at one time or another.

Thanks for the replies. This seems to be the mystery option and I haven't found the right source yet to determine which is correct. I am planning to leave the trim that is on it now there as the PO just replaced it. It's just something that has been in the back of my mind since the appraisal. My truck also has the upper body trim. Anyone else with any ideas?
Thanks.

I have a 72 k10 custom deluxe with lower woodgrain moldings and I have a 72 custom deluxe C10 with black lower moldings. I have seen discussions on this board more than once about which is original. I think all anyone can agree on is that they have seen them both ways. I think back then people could pretty much get what they wanted and there is nothing set in stone as far as "correct or incorrect" options. It does seem odd to have a woodgrain tailgate band with black moldings.

AFAIK the woodgrain lower molding is correct for 71/72. Every brochure I have seen with a 72 has woodgrain. My custom deluxe has the woodgrain as well. It will be replaced with the black trim as I do not care for what it came with.

Trim
My 71 Cheyenne cst came with woodgrain trim as well. I'm in the process
of restoring this truck and plan on painting it viper red with black and red interior. I just don't like the woodgrain trim and will be using the black trim. |
