10 bolt or 12 bolt
ok yall, heres another one for ya, been thinkin about this for a bit, i know i should know the answer to this just by takein my rear end cover off and looking, but im asking here first, what come stock in a 70 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive, in the rear end that is, is a 10 bolt or a 12 bolt that is in it, im thinkin about changeing out the gears becuase it runs to high on the road for me, even running at about 55 it still seems a bit high, im pretty sure that some one has changed it out before i got it, but im just wonderin what is stock in it, that way i can go from there, and then when i pull the cover, i will see which way they tryed to go with the truck,,,,,,thanks in advanced,,,,,,,mark

I vote 12. Not based on any reference of credibility whatsoever. Just count the cover bolts, it that simple.

so by going out and countin the cover bolts ill be able to tell if its 10 or 12??????

Yep stock came with a 12 bolt.

so when ppl talk about a 10 or 12 bolt thats how many are on the cover and not what holds the gear together then?

No, it is the number of bolts that hold the ring gear to the carrier. When someone talks about 10 or 12 bolt, it is technically not the cover bolts you're talking about.
Coincidentally, though, 99.something percent of GM rearends have the same number of rear cover bolts as ring gear bolts. Some mid 60's GM cars though, did have a 12 bolt cover and 10 bolt ring gear internals. So, it's not always the same. A 70 model truck had a 12 bolt stock though. Ten bolt rears came later in trucks.

thank u every one for the help, now i can go and take a look at which way i want to go with the rear end, and about how much im gonna spend for the gears, thanks again
