speedometer question

ever since ive owned my truck the speedometer hasnt worked and my dad is admiment about me getting it to work. I replaced both of the cables and it worked for maybe 5 min but bounced all around then quit. so i pulled out the nylon gear in the tranny and it is good. im thinking the only other thing is to get another speedometer from the scrapyard and try it out. or maybe bypass the cruise control and run one cable straight to the speedometer. any suggestions?

also it had a 700r4 in it when i bought it and it didnt work, and still didnt work when i put a th350 in it.

Yeah, when they bounce around it normally means the speedo is bad.

Curt, make sure your upper cable is locked firmly onto the speedmeter head, sometimes they are hard to lock in, you should hear a click when it locks in place. If that's OK, disconnect both cables from the cruise transducer, then stick a small screwdriver(like a pocket screwdriver) into the input side and turn it; it should turn easily without binding and the output should turn evenly with the input. If the transducer seems OK, try spining the cable going to the speedometer and watch the needle; the cable should spin freely and the needle should rise when you turn it. If both of those work OK, check to make sure the cable ends are long enough to reach the drives. I've seen the inner cables too short to reach the drive sockets. Hope that helps.

I have seen the drive gear inside the tranny get worn out which will make your speedo jump. if you have a turbo 350 you can take off the tail cone and look at the gear, it should be straight accross.
