Late model steering wheel?

I just bought a Lumina wheel like this and it won't go on all the way with the horn ring in use. If I install with out the plastic ring it goes all the way on almost too far though. What have you guys done to make this fit properly?. I have used a few other styles on other trucks that fit fine. Thanks

Are you using the horn ring from the car, or yuour original one?
You have to use the one from your column.

Andy- all I have is the original slip ring on the right in your picture. Do I need to get the Lumina slip ring also?

By chance, did your steering shaft fall down into teh column a bit, and is snagging when you try ti bolt it up?
While it is posable that you won't be able to use this wheel...I am 99% sure that it should fit.

Nope, didn't fall down. If I don't use the plastic piece I can get enough thread to bolt it down but it feels like it is rubbing against the turn signal arm. Plus I wouldn't have a horn. If I trimmed off the tapered part it would work but that part rides in the upper bearing. I'll have to keep playing with it I guess.

This one looks similar and it fit on a tilt column fine with the 72 horn contact. You have to connect the wheels horn cap to the 72 horn contact using the late model short horn wire.

Frank, my problem is the 71' slip ring seems too deep to even get the nut started. If I remove the slip ring then it's rubbing like it's too close. I'm sure if I trimmed the taper off the end I could get the nut on but then it wouldn't ride in the upper bearing race.

I don't know what to say. I have run a lot of different GM wheels on our columns, without that problem...but, I have not tried that exact wheel. Could you post a pic of the bottom of the wheel center and the top of your column. Maybe we can figure it out.

Here is a pic of the back of the wheel and you can see in the other pic I have the standard "tapered" slip ring. Maybe I need to grind the bottom of the wheel down a little to get the nut on?

Compare

This is one of the late model wheels that I use a lot. It looks like yours has more metal at the bottom. Maybe it won't let the wheel go down far enough. Anyone else see anything?

The back looks similar as far as the tapered hole but your silver circle is flush with the black part. Mine might be raised about 1/4". I'll check it tomorow afternoon.
