question about dynamat

I was thinking of not replacing the 3 pads on my firewall and instead I was going to use dynamat. Would this be ok or am I still going to need the firewall pads? Any help would be great. Thanks JIM

I'd do the dynamat then put the pads back or add some other padding. The more deadener the better, and dynamat and padding do different jobs. Dynamat stops panel vibration and resonance, while the padding acts as a sound absorber.

Thanks for the info. I was kind of hoping to be able to do without the padding. The new pads are over a 100 bucks. I can dynamat the whole cab for about 130 or so. I guess I am just being cheap.

Not to be argumentative, but I think they're basically the same thing .... both products add additional weight to the panel, which not only acts as a sound barrier, but primarily makes the panel heavier leaving it less prone to vibration (which would allow sound transfer, kind of like a passive radiator)

I believe it's all the same concept. I completely agree "the more, the better" You can never have too much sound deadener anywhere.

I'd just use the Dynamat, in fact, that's exactly what I did. I can't imagine you would need both. The Dynamat absorbs the sound as well as the heat. Mine's not on the road yet so I hope this was a wise choice.

I used Brown Bread and firewall pads, I only used one layer of BB but I might put some more on the floor and rear wall.

Accumat is cheaper than dynamat and I just bought the rest of what WalMart had on the self here for around 60 bucks. I got 8 packages of it and 1 pack will do the whole inside of a door. Just my .02 on the "cheaper" thing.

I used FatMat in my 66 Chevelle, that I purchased thru ebay for $100 for 100sq. ft. I haven't drove the car yet to notice a difference, I'm just stating that there are other alternatives to Dynamat.

I think you should not forget the factory type fire wall pad, or aftermarket carpet insulation. That is needed for heat/ cold insulation . The sound dampener material does nothing for insulation.
