NP205 shift handle bushing

Has anyone here replaced the bushing in a part time transfer case shifter?
Went to the chevy dealer today and their picture doesn't even show it.
Wonder if someone knows where to get one from or if I am going to have to go to a machine shop to get one made.
The shifter is a little wobbly and the bushing looks worn.

i just replaced the shifter bushing in a truck i had last summer.i went to a industrial supply house and they matched up a bushing for me and all i had to do was drive it in. i bought 2 of those bushings and they cost me about $1.20 for both of them.

Was it a difference in the play in the shifter?

I took mine to a machine shop and had them bore out the shifter handle to a perfect circle then machined a bushing for it. It really stopped a lot of the rattle.

Heres a cheap one for you. I had a Ferd bronco w/205 case , I cut a plastic oil jug and cut a strip as wide as the old bushing, wrapped it around the bolt and cut it to length. I took a little finesse to get it all in there but it worked as good as a new one.

You can take a brake pedal assembly apart in 67-72 and use the plastic bushing out of it and use it for the transfer case lever bushing...works and you may have one laying around in surplus parts.

Not sure what year appliction your after but I have used it on my older 67-72's. Takes some slop out.

helped

it helped alot. mine had got so bad that it would rattle when driving.after i replaced the bushing it stopped rattling and it was a little easier to get into 4 wheel drive because there was so much rust and dirt. i also drilled and taped hanled for greese fitting also.

You could update the bolt with a newer one for the np205 which came with a grease fitting in them also.

The shift handle I have has the larger bolt with the zerc fitting out the end of the bolt head. It is a chrome handle and the bushing is a little egg shaped.
I have a shift handle out of an older truck, smaller bolt, with zerc fitting at side of handle. I think the older black one was from a 78 and I don't know what the chrome one came from. the chrome one is a heavier duty one. It seems to be a little different on the angles but the knob end is at the same position as the black one. I want to use the chrome one so i guess I will find a machine shop and let them fix it. Chevy says they have a superseded bolt but I don't know if it will fit the larger chrome one. Confusing?
They still have no clue about a bushing.

6272075 is the original part number for the bushing which is #7 in the transfer case lever in NP205 cases..maybe they can find that number or a superceded number. # 8 is the spacer prt# 3983810 in 71 number went 6272075

Some pics of stuff related.

I took my shift lever to the local Ace hardware store and found a brass bushing that had a flang on one side that was long enough to go all the way through the hole. I did have to shorten it slightly on the belt sander but it works perfect. I tried every thing I could imagine and even bought a whole stock shifter set up from PICKMUP trying to get it 100%. Now I have no play in the shifter, it never comes loose, and no rattle or noise ever.

I've done the same thing with the brass bushing. Works great.

After looking at this close, the picture is of the bolt from the older black shifter. The one I plan on using on this truck (the chrome one) has a larger bolt and does not have an idented area where the grease hole is. It just has the grease hole. the zerc fitting is at the end. The length of the bolt and the threaded end are the same. I am starting to wonder if this shifter may have come from a F##d 205.
I will try to figure out how to use the digital camera to get pictures and post them here. They are somewhat different.

The picture of the shifter bolt above has an important element that has not be mentioned. Next to the large flat washer is another part called a wave washer. The wave washer is a compact spring and is used to keep a load on all the parts. Leave this out and there is a greater chance for rattles. Another type of compact spring is a bellville washer. Either one will work.

Good point Erl. The wave washers seem to either wear out or get their setting flattened some by a PO. The washers are still available new.

Finally figured out how to include pictures so what I am talking about can be seen.
The black shifter (not the torched one) came out of a 79 truck, had a smaller bolt with zerc on end. Chevy has that bolt but no bushing. The black torched one uses the same bolt but no zerc on the bolt, its on the shifter.
The chrome one is the one I want to install, but don't know what it came out of. all three are configured differently (angles) but look like they end up in the same position. The chrome one has a larger bolt (this is the one I need the bushing for) and only a hole in it for the grease. Looks like someone filed some grooves in it for the grease to move thru.
Seems like the NP205 had variations to the parts. I read they were used in Chevys, Fords, and Dodges.
