This might be a stupid question?!

What year did the front and rear side markers become functional? I got to looking under the hood and noticed that there are no wires running to them in the front or on the rear quarter. Or is there a lot of wiring missing on my 69? I haven't gotten pulled over so far.

Change came in the middle of the 69 model. Early ones had reflectors only, later had lamps.

Thanks Fred. Mine must be early 69 then. The reflectors have the knockouts for adding the bulbs. Anybody have any trouble with the police on this situation?

They dropped the annual inspection here in Oklahoma about 2 years ago. Now they pull you over for a taillight out and then stick it to you.

Hell I just drove past two cops tonight with my left front turn signal/parking light out and I didn't get pulled over. How did I know it was out? I couldn't see the reflection of it on the shiny brand new lexus in front of me.

In 68 and 69, lights were optional. If you bought a cab chassis with dual rear wheels, then you got a standard option of marker lights, and clearance lights. (requirted option)
In 70, they became standard. I have never seen/heard of a 69 with them that was not optioned on the SPID label in the glove box.

If you replace any of the lighting wiring harnesses, they come with the pigtails for the side marker lights. I bought a harness from LMC, and that was the case.

I have never heard of anyone getting stopped because the side marker lights don't work.

Here in Arkansas, the governor did away with vehicle inspections several years ago, to speed up license renewals. Now, we have earned the right to drive anything with a broken windshield, or seriously un-aimed headlights, missing head and/or tail lights, etc. If the cops stop you, it's generally for not having a license plate. If they do, and your paperwork is in order, they'll give you a day-glo plate-sized sticker that you can use for up to 30 days, until you register your vehicle. Cops were supposed to enforce the laws, but the budget cuts also prevented the State Police from adding to or replacing any of the troopers.

My 69 was built in Aug just a few days before the big "Woodstock Festival" (not that that makes it rare or anything, lol) but doesn't have the wiring for the sidemarkers. Hmmm I wonder if some gm plants were slower than others when it came to new options/upgrades. Doug

Got a 69 swb step and it came with wiring and lights on the side markers,
factory wiring harness, lights not spliced in.

I've only had my 68 for a few days. And I have been meaning to pull the side marker lenses and replace the bulbs, since none of them were working! Glad this thread came up!

I would have been really surprised if I had tried before seeing this, THANKS!
