Drum brake springs
Hello again to everyone.
I'm doing a brake job on my 68 and replacing shoes, hoses, spring and adjuster kits, and the wheel cylinders. When I went to the front I noticed the left front drum had a crack in it. I went to AZ and purchased 2 new drums for the front. The old drums have a spring that wraps around the outside of it  . I have 2 questions about that.1. What is that spring for? 2. Do I have to put it on the new drums? I have included pictures below of the old drum, new drum, and the crack. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mike |

i just did the drums, wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware on mine. i think the outer springs on the drums are for noise reduction (sqeeky brakes).

CPNE thanks for the search. I didn't realize that function was back up until now
 .nevada70cev did you put the springs back on with the new drums? If they are just for niose reduction I don't think I'm gonna put them on, but I'll keep them around in case the niose comes out and bothers me. Thanks for the help. Mike |

my sentiments exactly, my rear drums had the springs. i am keeping them just in case.

Seems like when I did mine that the spring would not stay in place on the new drum. It wanted to roll off because the lip on the new drum was not made for the spring. So I run mine without and have no noises.
Be careful taking that spring off. When I did it, it rolled off so fast it caught my shirt and pulled out a bunch of belly hair!
