Insurance Quesiton - UPDATED
I just went and put my new old truck on my insurance. I did it as a standard vehicle for now, I am not sure if I want to upgrade to classic or not. I think if I get it appraised and take some pictures to put on file with them then standard may work but I need to know what the bluebook values is on it. Can I find BB for 70s trucks online or does anyone have any info. My insurance company says they use the retail value.
here is a link to a description of the vehicle. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=148165 Thanks in advance for the help.

I think the insurance company will only allow what the books say its worth. The only way you will get more is if you insure as a classic that has been appraised.

Several classic car insurance companies do what they call an agreed value policy. You tell them the amount you want to insure the truck for and they set your premium based on that amount. You will have to send them pics of the truck and they will have several requirements about how you use the vehicle. It will however, be much cheaper than going through your reg. insurance company, who prob. won't do full coverage on the truck anyways.

Nationwide said that with the declared value I want to post, if I put in an appraisal and pictures it would be 18x.00 per 6 months (32.00 per month). Otherwise it is 120 per 6 months or 20 a month for std. insurance. Both of these are with comprehensive only, no collision. Does that sound about right and worth saving the hassle of shoping around, or are others coming out way better then this?

I just got a quote from American classic insurance for my truck. For 10,000 value on the truck, full coverage would be 96.00 a year. They just want one pic of the truck and of course they have restrictions about how you use the truck. No Hauling. So it depends on how you are going to use the truck. Just for show and light cruising, or everyday driving.

See thats the trick, I plan to use it for my daily driver, and to haul yard waste and the like. Nothing heavy but it is going to be used.

I insured my truck through state farm. I have another car through them, so my policy is cheaper.
I gave them several digital photos of the truck and insured as a classic. They would only insure for a specific value if the truck was appraised. To actually get insurance as a classic/hobby/show car, they required the truck had less than 2000 miles on it and I had to tell them that actually do attend some shows (1 or 2 a year is what I said). They tried to deny me classic because the truck had more than 2000 miles on it, but then I showed them pictures of my recent engine swap and I haven't heard anything from them since My insurance is $170 per year for full coverage

Actually, I just looked up the NADA book value on line and the low retail is 30 bucks less then I paid, and it only shows the AC as an option on the truck. In fact it shows the Invoice price for that truck about 2k less then the original sales receipt I have. I think I will leave it on std. insurance @ 120.00 for 6 months. That way I can drive it how I want. Just to be carefull I am going to take pleanty of Pics and get it appraised. Just to make sure they don't try to call it a parts vehicle.
Anyone think this is a bad Idea?

Shifty, be VERY CAREFUL with State Farm. When I had classic coverage, they limited me to 1000 miles a year, to and from shows only, then demanded an appraisal......and then refused to insure for the appraised value. BE VERY CAREFUL.

I had a lot of problems with SF. Look for smaller local companies and check with your state on claims experience. I put my 62 on American Collectors and have stated value on my truck with a small local co. Customer service experience is significantly better.

I just insured mine a month ago. I checked out State Farm because I have all my regular policies with them, and the fella said they insure collector vehicles. This was after I talked to Hagerty. Well, State farm only wanted to insure it for stated value which is not what I wanted because stated value means nothing and they had way too many restrictions. Plus, I would need to keep sending them pics or appraisals every year because the truck actually would depreciate from the insured stated value. Way too much hassle.
I decided to go with Hagerty because this is what they specialize in. They also have a better policy with agreed value coverage. Of course, if you drive it every day, you really have no choice but to go with a regular insurance company. demi |

I have Farmers Insurance. The truck was aprasied for a certain amount and that was its insured for. It has full coverage and theres no restrictions. 6 months after I insured it hail beat the crap out of it and they paid me like 2800 bucks. Oh, I pay about 80 bucks a month for the 67 and the 02 ZR2.

Allstate Here, I Have Full Coverage W/ Somewhat Of A Agreed
Coverage, I Was Told If I Could Produce Receipts To Justify A Certain Value They Would Honor It, And I Had Them Write It N That Way To, No Driving Restrictions, However I Have It Now Classified As Suspended Coverage, Which Means It Is Covered For Everything But Me Driving It, Oh Well, Since I'm Still Not Finished With Her I Guess I'll Survive, Oh Yea, How's $13.50 A Year Sound For 15k Coverage, Kinda Crazy If Ya Ask Me, They Are Going To Bump Me Up To 25k After It's Complete / Painted.

I have a 61 corvette and a 72 c-10 pickup with American Classic. They did not ask for an appraisal on either one and insured it for the value I stated. The Corvette has a 2500 miles per year restriction but the truck has none.
The rates were very reasonable. Check them out. Also, go on line to Hemmings Motor site and you can get a list of classic car insurers.
