How much does your ammeter needle move?
With ign. off (or on), and headlights on, my needle BARELY moves to the left. I would have expected more. Is this all you get? Fuses by radiator are OK.
Thanks. 72 C10 |

That's all mine did, but I switched to a volt meter underdash till I restore the inside of the cab.

It only registers the degree of charging or discharging from the battery. If the charging system is up-to-snuff and working correctly, it should move but just barely from center depending upon the load on the system.

If you want it to move a bunch, then disconnect the distributor positive lead and crank the piss out of the engine and then reinstall the positive lead. Start the truck and you will see the needle deflect alot more. That is when the charging system is sending a lot of juice to the battery. It is true that a healthy charging system will cause very little ammeter movement. A bad system on the other hand will be noticeable. The needle will move away from that center position. Telling you that the battery is supplying the load or that the alternator/generator is having to charge the battery way to much.

Turn on the lights/wipers/blower fan and it'll move more, w/engine off.
