Speedometer....ressurected!

So I found something really cool tonight. When I bought the truck, the speedometer didn't work. Didn't quite know why. I thought the speedometer gear in the tranny went out, but I pulled it out last night and found myself surprised...it looked fine! It's a two-piece unit...a bullet-shaped piece of metal with a plastic gear-wheel-on-a-stick through the middle of it. Never seen anything like it.

Started playing with it after I got it out - tried to attach the original speedo cable the PO put in it and realized the damned speedometer cable end didn't even fit onto the gear housing all the way, so the speedo cable wasn't making contact with the plastic part. Went to Advance Auto tonight and got a new 83.5" speedometer housing (last one was too short) and it fits like a champ. Testing it out tomorrow.

You guys ever seen anything like this before?

I'm not sure if mine is even the right one. The speed reads correctly until I get about midway through third gear. Anything over 45 is totally off, but it's pretty accurate up to that point.

I know, I know, I need to get one of those speedo ratio gear thingies. But ... this should be stock? Strange.
