Building a Crate To Hold Engine...

I need to build a crate for an Engine (Small Block). Was wondering if anyone out there has done this to transport or store an engine. Would be nice to see some Pics and info on this. Don't know were to start myself as I need to do this, so any help would be great.

Thanks

Brian

hey dude, I just did this last week to mail an engine. I'll give materials list first, then how to:

materials:

1 300ft roll of plstic wrap (wal-mart)
1 wooden pallet
2- 10 foot sections of thick nylon cord (rope'll do too)

I wrapped the engine in the plastic wrap really good, then right before I finished I put a piece of paper with the ship to address on it. I then wrapped a couple more times to keep the address "label" on there.

I then took the engine and put it on the pallet. My pallet was a large one, so I was able to cut a section off of it with a circular saw. The shippers charge by size, so I saved $40 just by cutting the extra off.

I then strapped the engine to the pallet (making sure not to block the holes where a forklift fork would need to go). I used some mongo electrical tie straps to tie mine, and it worked great. Central freight picked it up with no complaints. Also, you can go to www.freightquote.com and they'll fix you up big time..they saved me major $$$'s.. and the delivery was to the other persons doorstep, cause they didn't have a truck for pickup.

Why not just pick up a crate from a crate motor? I know a number of places that deal in crate motor installs, and they have to get rid of them all the time. Just stop by and tell them to save you the next one.

that is a good idea;however, weight is also factored in on the price.. A crate usually weighs more than a cut-down pallet.

Going to a place that sells Crate Motors won't do for me cause I don't know anyone for miles that does that around here. I do work at a Lumber Yard so I was hoping a could rig something up with scrap lumber from around the yard.

So the Pallet trick does have me interested but I want to be able to set the engine on the pallet upright on the oil pan or some how get it to rest on some wood on the sides of the block(?) so it's not resting on the oil pan actually. I want to pre-make this thing before I have to pick this engine that will go in this contraption.

Anyone else? Maybe some measurements?

Dealer? They don't have crates from engines? Try that.

I have a wooden stand a motor is sitting on right now. I didn't make it but I bought an engine and the guy let me have it to transport it in my truck. The engine is held up on the sides by the wood yet has a space in the middle so the oil pan is free and does not hit or rest on anything. It is only a tiny bit wider than the block which makes it nice. I will try to get some pictures and dimensions for you. It was made for a BB but it has a 350 on it right now and its fine.

If you can fab-weld brakets, you could cut a plate the size of the block's motor mount bosses, drill corresponding holes, and weld some angle iron/tubing to the plates to make a stand that could be affixed to a pallet. These eng storage stands are for sale at Jegs. Of course, you wouldn't need the casters.

I did pretty much the same thing that Saxmo did. I did not wrap my whole engine in plastic though. I just used duct tape and taped all the openings real well. I then laid the motor on its side and use a couple of those ratchet straps to tie it down. Made it to TN or somewhere down south (from South Dakota) just peachy.

Canadian694x4, I will try to get some pictures as soon as possible. It is going to be harder to see the design with the engine sitting on it. But I will take a few tomorrow morning and post them.

i ahve shipped several including overseas and always used a pallet. Turned the engine upside down (pan up) and I wrapped in HD garbage bags and duct tape or the saran wrap method. I used a bander with crimps. Lumber yard should have one of those.
