Oil Pressure Gauge?
After putting in my big block my oil pressure gauge is pegged all the time.
My question is – What is the pressure rating on the stock gauge and is there a difference gauge for a big block? I want to keep the stock gauge and not have to hang an aftermarket somewhere.

Stock is 60psi, I think series 40-up had 80 psi.

The bigger trucks had an 80 PSI gauge that is perfect for engines with a high volume pump.

I had a similar problem. I put a rebuilt 305 in my 3/4 and the oil gauge stays pegged. And I don't want to do aftermarket under the dash either.

does havin it pegged bug you to the point of buying a new guage? As long as it is tached out...you know you have mega oil pressure...and all is fine.

my 400 sb does the same. It does bug me, i just want to see my real pressure. I was going to change to an electric aftermarket to go with my other guages, but if someone works out a factory replacement i'd like to see it.

I may be wrong on this but I thought the GM oil pumps had a little pressure relief back to the suction when pressure was to high. That is the one that has the spring they tell you to remove if your welding the pickup in the pump so the spring doesn't relax and open all the time. Maybe I'm confused. Just remember pressure isn't the most important thing, flow of oil is. The bearing actually have pressure that is pretty hi in the oil wedge area. This is caused by the rotating crank trying to ride up the oil wedge. We don't measure pressure there on cars but at work we have some indications that show oil wedge pressure which is at least 2 times higher than any oil pump output pressure on the turbine.
