Mine was an easy install because my 350 was the same length as the 700R4 but I love it. I can even hear the radio cruisin" down the freeway with 3:70 gears. I haven't checked the mileage but it's alot better.

I installed a 700R4 behind a BB in my 4x4. Moved the motor forward 1-3/4" to make room for the extra length (piece of cake). TV cable is a bit of a pain to set up, and the shifter takes some monkeying (that's if you stick with the stock, linkage type shifter arrangement. I'm going to switch to a cable soon.). Otherwise, the deeper first gear makes for some quick launches (I'm running 3.73:1 gears and 33" tall tires), and the OD is a Godsend on the freeway. For me, it was worth the effort. Just be sure to install trans pressure and temp gauges, and make sure there's adequate cooling.
Can't give you any real definitive numbers on mileage because I don't drive it daily, anymore. And when I do drive it, I'm usually flogging the p*ss out of it! I think I checked it on a trip over the mountains, once, and I averaged close to 12mpg. I figure that's pretty good, considering the motor's pumped, and I drive 90mph with my hair on fire.

Hair on Fire!!! lol...Now I know what the chrome fire extinguishers are for....
The 700r4 is a nice modification for these old trucks, especially if you are running low gears (high numerically) and doing any type of cruising. If it is a tow truck, work truck or serious drag truck, it may not be worth the effort and expense. As for mileage increase, keep in mind that the newer trucks with overdrive and fuel injection still only get about 16/20 mpg. My dad had a '69 C10 with a 283/350 combo that we could get 14 mpg out of about 20 yrs ago. It boild down to how much highway driving you'll be doing and how easy you are on the gas. I wouldn't count on more than maybe 2mpg bump regardless. The benefit is cruising and the lower first gear. If you get better mileage, great. Check out www.700r4.com for more answers to 700r4 FAQs. Just my opinion.
