What rims fit 72 with 8 lugs - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I recently traded a shotgun and a tec-22 for a 1972 GMC 2500 2 wheel drive with 8 lug wheels. It's in poor shape,the person I got it from had no money and when needed new tires went to the junk yard and pulled 4 rims/tires off a junked tow truck. I can not see the writing on sidewalls of tires. I had no real luck searching, it seems most have only 5 lugs.

What I want to know is, can I buy someones brand new tire/rim combo from a brand new truck that people are selling on eBay after they upgrade?
What size tires came on my truck?

Welcome to the board. Where are you located? I've got 4 8lug 16.5 wheels (aluminum) with 2 tires that are new, they came off my 71 1 ton, so I know they will fit.

Welcome from Northern California. The new Chevy 8 lugs will fit. I have a set on mine and I like em. some people don't. The offset is not the same and the wheel rides a lil closer inboard. Think it was Junkyard John that said "looks like a fat man on stilts". Still, it was hard to beat $400 for tires wheels and caps that were almost brand new. When these tires go I'm gonna try for larger width tires to try and make up for the off set. Please don't quote me, but I have heard the newer 8 lug dodge rims fit as well. Best thing to do is, if you can, take the truck to a local yard. The one's around here will let you "try on" some rims as long as you do all the work. You can see if you like them and see how they fit.

Chickenwing....you have an awesome truck bro. Not only is it real sharp, it also looks bad-ass!! It's also painted in my fave color combo for these trucks! I have a crappy 67 I can trade ya for! j/k

That was me that said fat man on stilts...but mine is the same way with later steel rims on it.
Dodge wheels up through the mid 90's will work...same with ford up to the early/mid 90's...not sure about newer...I know ford went to a flat lug nut so those ones won't work.
If you plan on doing soe real hauling with it, then don't get the dodge or ford wheels. You'll need GM wheels, or correctly fitting aftermarket rims. These are hub eccentric, which means the hub carrys the load, the lug nuts just retain the wheel to the hub. But if it is just a car with a bed, then that won't matter.
I would also stay aweay from anything 16.5 too onless you plan on big mudder tires. Street tires are mostly all 16 inch now, and you'll pay more for the 16.5 with less selection. 16.5 will only be on older stuff...I think GM phased them out in 80 or so...somewhere around there anyways.

I have a 70 GMC 2500 and it came with 750x16x6 from the factory. Currently I have TOYO 245x75x16 on it now. Newer dodge should fit. I have a dodge rim and factory tire as a spare and it worked when I needed to use it before I just bought the new tires. I have also used f**d rims (up to mid 80's, wouldnt know about after that though) on these 3/4 trucks with no problems.

When I switched mine over to 16" rims the guys at the tire shop told me that they saw a lot of bent Dodge rims. They only had a few GMs bend and rarely had a F%$d rim come in bent. Given that I looked for a set of F%$d rims and never looked back. They've been on the truck for quite a few years now with no problems. Yes, I've hauled some pretty heavy loads.

If ya saw a head on or rear facing pic it would be more obvious. Longhorn Man has a bit more drastic opinion of it than me.

Still think that a bigger, fatter tire will make up for a lot. Won't know for 30 thousand miles or so.

I agree with the Longhorn man. The back needs a much wider tire to fill that space or spacers behind the wheeels to look correct. Very fine truck Chick!

If it makes you feel better, I think about that conversation more and more...every time I look at my rig.
it bothers me less...but I think I'll still end up with some spacers in there or something.

I run this stock looking Ford rims on my LONGHORN...............A little deeper than the Chevy ones..............

Besides they came with the set of tires when I bought them...........

I went with the 16" Eagle's ,whatever you do take this as an oppertunity to go with 16" wheels and tires , The 16.5 and gettting pricey and harder to find .
