ridge reaming help

Ok quys... quick engine build question. I'm going to do a quick re-ring job in a 305 for a 82 blazer that i'm going to sell. I know that I have to ream the ridge off before I hone so that the rings don't break because i'm not going to bore it out. I just want new rings in the thing. Anyone done this? Any tips? Do I need to get a good reamer or will a harbor fright (yes, frightening) one work?

Any will work just make sure you do not take off to much, you just want to get it good & smooth. with the hone make sure you get a nice X pattern going this will will help to give the rings a good seal, & when honning use a electric drill you will fry a cordless, either way it takes time to get the cross hatches...Hope this helps you.......

If you MUST ridge ream don't go hog wild, take as little as possible. My opinion is if it needs a ridge reamer it needs to be bored

if you got a ridge, buy pistons and a bore job, your labor will go much farther..........

If you are just honing it out so you can get it re-ringed and sold ( rebuilt engine in the ad right ) then by all means ream that ridge. To be honest where I am at if you bring a block to the machine shop that is clean you can get it ridge reamed and honed for about $50 which might be comparable to a tool you'll use once.

It'll be sloppy so use cast iron rings and dont go to smooth on the hone so it breaks in fast . Dont forget to put new valve seals in it so it wont smoke for a few months.

Its not the best way to refurbish an engine but you'll get 20,000 more miles out of it for two hundred or so bucks. since your just going to sell it off whats the point in doing a full rebuild.
