New crate engine which would you choose?
I have been planning for a new crate engine in case mine goes bad. I have been considering the 260HP/350TQ $1300 version with a cam upgrade or the base 350 HO with 330HP/380TQ for about $2300. Would you spend the extra money for the vortex heads and 212/222@.050 cam? Or go with the other motor and select a Cam? IF so which cam? I am considering the XE268 or the truck 4X4 with 260/272 .427/.454?

What are you going to use it for? If it were a daily driver I would just opt. for the stock 350/260HP (figure the stock 350 about 170-180hp). If you want to scream around a little bit then go for the 350delux/330hp (oil pan to carb with HEI dizzy $3000).
I would go with the stock crate and run the warranty out before I cammed it or made any changes. The stock 260hp engine with the stock heads just new cam, carb, intake and header you can get up to about 310hp. If your RPM's are never above 3000 the higher output engines won't show anything better than the stock unit and maybe worse. If your RPM's regularly go above 3g's then the high output engines will be worth it. JMHO

Have you considered buying a GM shortblock, and using aftermarket heads?

They have a new crate that is the 260hp with a different cam, i think it is the one you were talking about. Total hp is 290 and the engine is around$1700.00

The 290hp looks like it is the 260hp with an L-82 cam, and a few folks on the thread below thought the torque at lower rpms with this cam wouldn't be very good in our trucks.
check it out . Food for thought...................... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=148500&page=1

I bought one of the 290 hp crate motors from my local chev dealer about 6 months ago for my 39. It was about $1650. I was going to get the 260 hp and swap cams but the 290 had what I wanted anyway. Shes just about ready to fire, just waiting on the radiator I ordered.
