Another 700R4 Question
I have a 700R4 ready to be installed in my 69 C10, however I have a question and problem with the rear trany mount.
The PO installed the T350 in my truck, the rear trany cross member is of unknown origin. The rear mount cross member mounts only to the bottom of the frame, and has only one bolt into the trany. This cross member will not work with my 700R4, without some modification. I have located a stock 69 auto rear cross member in a local wrecking yard. Will this stock rear trany cross member work with a 700R4 or do I need one of the after market mounts. Thanks |

I am running a 4L60E basically an electronically controlled 700R4. I am using the stock crossmember with a stock replacement tranny mount from a local parts store. Works perfect with no problems.

i too am installing a 700r4 in my 72 truck. i am going to use the stock x-mbr , but i have been told that the mount will need to be moved. i am under the impression that everything will work if you do the right measuring. i am intersted to hear/see how your turn out & if i get done first then i will share..

I just got done shoehorning a 4L60E and L31 (5.7L Vortec) into my 71 C20.
The stock X-member works fine, but has to be moved rearward, but there are holes pre-drilled in the chassis by the factory that line up PERFECTLY. The only modification I did was to drill one new hole in the X-member to accomodate the 4L60s single stud mount, and I had to shorten the linkage a bit (the 4L must be about 1/4" wider at the shifter arm). I had to move the stock cross member back about an inch so I can drop the tranny pan on my 700R4 to replace the filter. I haven't hooked up the linkage yet so I don;t if there will be any issues there or not. If you don't have a drain plug in the pan now's the time to install one...

I used the Lokar column automatic linkage and it worked great.

I installed a 1988 700R4 in my truck recently using the stock crossmember and a stock two-bolt mount. I had to slide the crossmember back a few inches, and had to drill new mounting holes in the upper and lower portions of the chassis. I ended up trimming about 3/8" off the front edge of the crossmember to allow a deep pan to fit. The older 700R4 tailshaft housings have the mount location farther back which is nice because it gets the crossmember away from the pan.
Here's an earlier post about the driveshaft and tailshaft housing: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=146217 |

Thanks eveyone for the info, I am going back to the wrecking yard for the stock cross member. I will not be able to get back on this project for a couple of weeks, will let you know how it goes. As useall I find more info from the members of this site than all of the books I have.
