Welcome to the board from Seattle, WA. It will most likely have more torque than a stock 350...depending upon the particular 350 but could also have less than a high performance 350. Get the casting numbers off the back of the block and the stamped numbers off the top of the block on the forward edge of the passenger side deck. Then we can start to determine what it is. Sounds like a good deal if it is a runner!

Welcome to the board. The 402 when new had more torque and HP than the stock 350 in our trucks. BBC have more torque in the low end and make "EASY" hp. The 402 in '72 had more HP and troque than the late '70 454 because of the pollution control on the later engines. 454 is larger bore and longer stroke than the 402, The longer stroke on the 454 can make more torque than a 402 when built up. The BBC also feel stronger than a 350 on the ramp up in a heavy truck. But a built SBC will wind out higher and stay there longer than a BBC. In an empty truck of 4000lb's or more the BBC and a SBC will be about the same but if you are hauling anything or towing the BBC will do it easier, cooler, and more economically.
Rebuilding a BBC is about $1200 in parts alone and to rebuild a SBC you are probably looking at $500 in parts.
As far as rare goes all old BBC 396/402/427 are getting harder to find, But the 454 are still plentiful as most people today are going with the gen V,VI block 502-572 cubic.
inch.
I have been running mine for about 23 years and with a BBC you can really be running on 6-7 cylinders and not even know it because of the power on these things. I went to change plugs 1 time and found 1 loose in the head(like only being held by the plug wire) and 1 boken plug wire. I had been hauling a slide in camper (truck weight around 8700lb) all over hill and dale and never felt the drop in power.
Have fun.

hello to all again, sorry i couldn't answer last night, i went to bed. thanx for the info on the 402. I can't wait to throw it in my car, is that bad? no it's not a truck, sorry it is a 63 chevrolet impala ss, i bought the car with no engine or tranny so i wanted to go big for the first time. the 100$ was in the form of a 1989 chevy 1500 2w.d. with 700r4 tranny and 350 f.i. the truck was in fair condition in and out the engine was very sound but it had about 190,000 miles and was used for pulling job trailers. my boss got an inheritance so he went new on his truck and i bought the leftover 89 1500 for 100$ he thought the starter was bad, nope tightened the nut, he thought the radiator leaked, nope tightened the upper hose clamp, so that is how i got my $100 402. as for pictures no problem except that i am not very computer literate, so i don't even know where to begin to get pictures in here "maybe mail them to somebody else to post" lol

Where are you located?
The only problem you have now is finding a transmission and flexplate/flywheel that would fit in the Impala. I think the combo you got out of the truck has the big flexplate which is going to cause problems with bottoming out in the impala. Most cars ran a 12" 153 tooth flexplate, Your trans out of the truck has a 14" 168 tooth flexplate. But with a little adjusting it could be a screamer. It will definitly burn your tires off real quick.
Not sure if 63 was the first year for the 409 BBC in the impalas or not.
http://www.chevytalk.com/ would have more info on the impalas. But don't leave here with out telling us what your intensions are with the truck!
