It's behind that hole that the plunger is located. I use a narrow sharp awl, rather than a piece of wire. Then, it actually comes out! They sure make it difficult.
It would not have mattered what I used as the locking mechanism had stuck from old age or lack of lubrication. A smal wire like a paper clip worked on the one I replaced it with . Thank you very much.
