Doug Thorely Headers

Anybody have anything to say about Thorely's headers? I hate my hookers' and I have a friend that LOVES his Thorely's. They looks *****en and seem to be quality(IE cleanest welds and great flanges/gaskets). I've never heard anything bad about them and wonder if there is a reason I never hear anything.

i don't have them but my neighbor has a set on his 67 camaro. they are pricey but he says he'll never run anything else. what kind of issues are you having out of the hookers? i've never had a problem out of em.

I PUT A SET OF DOUG THORLY TRI-Ys ON A 71 WITH A S/B, & THEY WERE GREAT HEADERS. THE FIT & FINISH WAS GREAT. THEY WERE A LITTLE SPENDY THOUGH, BUT FROM THAT POINT ON.. ALL I WILL EVER USE IS THORLYs OR HOOKER SUPER COMP. THE CHEAPER HEADERS ARE A LESSON IN FUTILITY, & I WON'T USE THEM, EVEN IF SOMEONE GIVES THEM TO ME FOR FREE. JOHN

Overall, I've been pleased with the tri-Y's. Thicker mounting flanges and heavy-guage tubing makes for better durability. They've been on my daily driver for 2 1/2 years. No exhaust leaks and no rust- through. If I had it to do over, I would have gotten ceramic coating rather than chrome. The chrome blued about 2 minutes into my initial startup. If appearance matters, go with ceramic. Additionally, the passenger-side header is a little close to the starter. I wrapped my starter (mini starter actually) with foil-backed fiberglass insulation as a heat barrier. On the driver's side, one of the tubes is kind of close to the lower A-arm shaft (where the grease fitting is). Not problematic, just close. All this considered, I selected them mainly for durability for a truck that is driven regularly and I'm glad I did.

The guy at the speed shop said he wouldn't go with anything else but Doug Thorleys on my truck. He said they fit the best and you never have to mess with them. Of course, I had a bit of heartburn when he told me the price, but I have done alot of bussiness with him and he has never steered me wrong. I gotta say these things are heavy duty, the flange on them looks to be 3 times thicker then some of the el-cheapo brands I have seen, nice beefy weld joints. They will turn colors on you, I prolly woulda went for the ceramic coating if I had it to do over again, other then that I am very pleased. Along with my magnaflow exhaust, the whole setup sounds very healthy without being deafening at freeway speeds

I have had Doug Thorley (hard chrome) Tri-Y headers on the big block in my 68 GMC 4X4 for 20 years and they fit great, I have never had any problems with them at all.. I will admit since they are nickle chromed they do turn blue in about the first 5 minutes..

The only thing I can say bad about them is they work good on low end torqe, but kill the top end. I had a pair on a 500hp truck for awhile and it sort of fell on its face up high. I put on a set of hooker super comps and picked up 3/10th in the quarter! If I was building a daily driver or tow 4X4 rig I buy them again, but hooker and hedman make good headers too. You gotta compare apples to apples, ie do not put the $79 hookers up against the $400 tri Y's get the $300 hookers and you will be just as happy!! My 2 cents
