700r4 into a 72 LWB

What all is needed for the shifting linkages and indicator on the steering column to make this all work correctly behind a 350?

Thanks,

Wilson

I used a Lokar shift linkage set it worked really well, as far as the indicator there are several companies out there that sell one that has the proper set up for the 700r4, check the FAQ section.

Not trying to hijack the thread but that's exactly what I'm looking for. Is it a specific Lokar set up for the 700R4 on just a generic Lokar setup? Thanks.

I think I found it; Lokar #ACA-1800. Go to the Lokar website and check it out. Summit sells it for $39.95 + $8.38 handling

Yes it is the ACA-1800 and Summit is where I purchased it, sorry for not giving more detail. It states that it will work with several tranys. It worked great for me. I don't have an overdrive indicator yet but have seen several threads that state that many of the vendors that advertise on this site sell them.

I have the stock setup from a 350/350 auto truck. It works for me. I would like to get the lokar setup foor the bragging rights though.

Mine has the stock 350 linkage too. I can't pull it into low though because of the pointer on my tilt column...

There are several good threads that discuss the 700r4/4l60 install. How I did mine was to purchase a 4l60 from my local Chevy dealer part# 12363206 it is a high performance version of the trany that was put in the 90 camaros (has a three year warranty from GM). You can find complete info about this tanny at www.Sallee-Chevrolet.com. You can purchased a cross member from several vendors on this board or you can use a stock auto cross member although you will have to move it back but it lines up with holes that are already in the frame. I had to buy a extension housing so it would mount using a standard two bolt mount. The drive shaft I used was from a 72 lwb with a turbo350 9” tail shaft it is almost the exact length and has the same yoke. They also sell a complete kit that uses your brake switch to lock and unlock the converter. Speedo cable is the same of course you have to setup your speedo gears according to rear gear ratio tire size etc. (they provide a calibration cart with the info at Sallee). The trany lines are the same as turbo 350 just need a little tweaking. Flex plate and starter are the same, I used the lokar shift linkage ACA-1800, there are several vendors out there that sell a OD shift indicator and pointer although I have not purchased one yet. I hade to fabricate a throttle cable bracket because theirs was for a square cable and mine was a round one and also a spring return bracket as the tv-cable does not allow the stock setup. THE MOST IMPORTANT SINGLE ISSUE ON THE 700R4/4L60 IS THE TV-CABLE, IT IS NOT A KICK DOWN OR PASSING GEAR CABLE IT REGULATES EVERY ASPECT OF THE TRANSMITIONS SHIFT CHARACTERISTICS AND IF YOU WANT TO SEE HOW FAST YOU CAN CAN BURN ONE UP JUST DRIVE IT A FEW MILES WITH IT ADJUSTED IMPROPERLY. Go to www.bowtieoverdrives.com and check out their tv-cable made easy setup, it is what I used and it works great, I have also read in many threads of other members that have used them and are very happy. The 700r4/4l60 can be a very reliable and positive addition to your truck and can be very sturdy when setup correctly I have 180000 on the original trany in my 1988 4wd pickup. As I mentioned there are several really good threads in the FAQ section of this site and many different places to purchase a good trany.
Hope this helps

Isn't the 4l60 an electronic version of the 700R4 requireing a computer hook up. Did you run it without electronics and it worked like the 700R4?

The early versions of the 4L60 (700r4) were not computer controlled. They still used a speedo cable and TV cable the only electronic hook up was the converter lock up. I believe it was in about 92-93 that all 4L60s were computer controlled. This trany came from GM listed as a 4L60. I think at first it was just a name change, I worked at a GM parts depot for 31 years and all of computer controlled tranys were listed as 4L60e

72GMC51, Where did you get the plate bolted to your carberator for the throtle return spring. I used The Bowtie setup and also need to move my spring to the front.

I had it made at the shop I work at, the shop forman is really good with sheet metal. It is made of stainless steel and is very ridged, I can see if he will make a few more, PM me I will let you know. He also made me a custom radiator cover for the top of my radiator, I included a picture it is really cool, have not polished it or punched the holes (to hard to drill uses a special punch to make the holes.
