700 R4 into a '76
Need a new trans for my '76. The wrecker has a replacement TH350, but he also has a 700 R4 for a good price. I know the 700 has a fussy TV cable, but other than that will the thing fit? I'm thinking of crossmember location and the number of splines on the input/output shafts. What about overall length?

If the TH350 is a 9" tail then you're fine. They have very minimal difference and you can still you the same driveshaft. The splines are the same as well. You do of course have to slide it back a little and drille holes to mount the crossmember in the frame. Along with that you have to wire the torque converter as well. For that look here http://73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/lockup.htm

The TV cable isn't as trickt as you would think but the gromet that it hooks to on your carb is different than the th350 you can get them for 5.00 at any parts store.

Thanks for your advice and for the link. I'm still confused about the TV hookup. I remember reading posts about guys who have poorly adjusted TV cables on 700R4's roasting their transmissions after a few freeway miles. What is going wrong in these cases?
