starter problems
15
I have a 1972 GMC 1500 custom. I have replaced the starter on it about 15 times in a year. The problem isnt the fly wheel, I just put a new one on. The problem is that when you put the starter on it doesnt line up with the fly wheel right. I shim it to fit perfectly, but a week later it is grinding on the fly wheel. if anyone can tell me what to do to fix this I would appricate it. |

Are you sure you have the right flywheel, starter, and if it is shimmed properly then there shouldn't be a problem, Some of the shim kits have a little rod to guage the distance between the flywheel and the starter, You could possibly have the wrong number of teeth on the flywheel also other than that I don't really know what it could be.

yea the fly wheel is right and the starter too. About a year and a half ago i got everything working correctly, but one of my starter bolts broke and when i went to start the truck it chiped the teeth on the starter, and ever since then i have had problems. i guess the only thing to do is put a new fly wheel and starter on it and cross my fingers.

Sounds like your starter may be twisting itself under the load of cranking your motor. To fix this, go to a Chevy dealership parts depratment, and ask for a starter brace. It is a small piece of bent angle iron that goes from the front of the starter to a hole that is drilled and tapped in the block of your motor. It will cost around $5, and it will keep the starter from moving when it cranks. Good luck!
