I decided awhile ago, I wanted a new radio system for my truck but didn’t want to cut the dash. So I improvised! This glove box was custom fabricated for me this weekend. It’s made out of 20-gauge galvanized steel. It took about 5 hours from start to finish. Its made so that I can push it into the glove box hole and then pull it back onto the flanges. I thought about making the glove box have some depth to it on the side of the CD player but I was paying the guy $ 25.00 an hour and decided the clean 2 ½ inch depth would look the best and cost the least. Once the box was finished I decided we should add some bottom support to the CD player since I wont be putting a back support hanger on the back of it. After it was all made we acid etched the steel and then gave it a coat of some type of acid primer that eats into the steel so that you can put down a top layer. We used some auto paint he had on the shelf. It’s a satin black and has a ratio of 7 parts paint to 1 part hardener. I can’t wait to install it! Just have to wait a few more days for the paint to harden and then I think ill try to install a small amp behind the glove box so that I wont have to take it out any time soon. All in all he charged me 5 hours labor and $ 15.00 for material. Now I have the best looking glove box in an old beat-up olive green 1970 pickup! Who cares if all my insurance and registration paper work fall out every time I go to open the box? My plan is to install an infrared repeater from the outside to the inside of the glove box and use the CD player remote to control it.

that looks very nice.. i would want more depth to it on the other side of the CD player. but it does look like a nice idea. have been wanting to do the same with mine, just dont like the idea of cutting th dash. you need to post pics for sure.. and some of the infrared repeater.. would be nice to see.

Nice work on the door

My only concern with that setup is the thieves can still see it and may want to break in...

The reason I went with the shallow concept is because my cab is a working A/C cab and that vent hose connection measures 7 inches from the drivers side of the glove box. Thats why I didnt mount the CD player in the center of the panel. The only spot to actually have any depth to the glove box would have been a space a couple of inches in width between the vent hose and the CD player. I can still easily cut a hole in the face of the panel and put a sleeved box with flanges in but for now I am leaving it the way it is. Ill have some mounted pictures before long.

looks good...i have an idea for the registration...put a clip on the flat part and clip your registration there so it doesnt fall out
