Little Help!

So it's been raining here in Minnesota for the last few days and I havent fired up the old girl for a few days. During a break in the rain today I ran down to the gas station to get some munchies. She started up just like normal, I let her warm up for about a minute and then I took off. I always start in second, but as I hit third gear and eased into the throttle she sounded like she was trying to puke her guts out. It was the weirdest thing. It sounded like it was trying to cut out or something. The really wierd thing was that I was coming from under my shifter.
If you've ever lit a bottle rocket and held it until just before it blows, thats what it sounded like. ppffffffffftttttttt. Of course I let off the gas when I heard the noise, and kept on all the way to the station in 2nd(really not that far of a drive). When I started back home I tried third again, same thing only this time it was louder and I swear I smelt something smokey. I looked behind the truck, no fluids, no smoke, nothing. What the hell gives??!! Any ideas

Bummer Cory.. If you're lucky It's just a linkage problem. What transmission do you have?

I'm not exactly sure. I need to crawl under it and clean everything um. It's a four speed. And It's 3/4 ton and 4x4 to I think its the "granny tranny" sm????

Did you try getting it into fourth?

Is it possible that some wiring has gotten caught up in your linkage?

If it is caught up and the linkage is cuttin the insulation it's gonna short to ground, that would account for the sound effects as well as the smoke and smell.

jhwkns no I didnt hit fourth. But tomarrow I'm gonna try to get her to work(about three miles) if it doesnt make it then, I have a good excuse to play hookey. I did drive it home in third from the station, but I was carefull to be ginger on the throttle. Because when I hammered on it the noise came again. It seems like if I drive it like a 90 year old woman everything seems fine. But If I drive it like the 22 year old I am the noise comes again.

screamin-Guess I havent thought of that but this noise resembled nothing of wire tangles. Take a plastic oil basin and slide it over some concrete really fast, that noise discribes the exact sound that came from under the center hump of my truck. It only happened in third gear, not second.

I'm thinking it has to be something with the clutch or the tranny. But I'm really at a loss for Idea's.

IIRC this "granny" trans has no shift linkage except for the shifter itself sticking out the top cover.
pull the plug on the side & check the lube level. worst case scenario you have a bad synchronizer
am I correct on the 3rd gear actually being 2nd? (low gear, first, second, third) making noise when shifter is to the right & forward?

I am trying to visualize what is inside & where on these. if all else fails I can remove the top of mine sitting on the garage floor collecting dust. I will get back to ya.

68c15 yes I guess that would be correct because 1st gear is ungodly low and slow. I was thinking the same thing about the linkage. Cause the noise came from right under the shifter. I wonder about syncros because I can shift this thing without the clutch no problem. I mean It's not as easy as some of the rigs I drive from day to day but If my clutch is starting to go out what are some of the signs? Not to take away from the origianal q's or anything. I really appreciate your guys' help so far.

after looking at mine I would say it is time to replace the trans. it sounds like the bearings on the countershaft are going out. is reverse noisy also?
