Hydraulic Clutch Questions

I recently bought some parts from a board member and I need some help in assembling my new hydraulic clutch kit. Does anyone have some pics of how the hydraulic clutch master cylinder is installed from the factory?


A few obvious questions come to mind.

Does the master cylinder use a boot on the firewall like the older mechanical linkage?

I assume the master cylinder locates on the studs that are attached to two legs that extend from the clutch pedal pivot?

Are there any reference points on the firewall for the location of the master cylinder?

Where is the clutch master cylinder reservoir attached (fender or firewall)?

I would appreciate any guidance someone can provide.

i never owned a chevy pickup with the hydraulic clutch setup, but below is a pic of where cylinder is mounted to firewall. maybe someone else will have others.

your assumption that the master cylinder is mounted by the support rods is correct. what year is your C10? if it is 84 or newer, it will have dimples in the firewall where the holes should be for the master cylinder. it is possible for pre-84 trucks to have the dimples as well. my 82 C10 had provisions for 3.5" dash speakers even though they werent available until 85, so GM was doing a little thinking ahead before they started producing certain options. here's a pic of my setup on my 86. if you dont have the bracket to mount the master cylinder resi to, i think i may have an extra kicking aroudn somewhere.

Thanks for the help. I don't have any of the firewall mounted stuff. Let me know what you need for the bracket and/or reservoir shipped to 46229.

I will be installing this in an 86 cab that I am using to fix my rusty 84. I'll take a look for the dimples you mentioned. I have seen similar dimples on the older trucks for the holes for the clutch pushrod and boot. I was hoping the General had made provisions for the assembly line.

mine is an 86 2wd automatic cab, so it has undergone some major modification it had the firewall dimples, as did a friend's '84 K10. i'll take a look to see what i've got laying around, it'll probably be tomorrow before i can do so, i have to go visit my dad in the hospital in a little while.

No problem, looking after the old man comes first. Is that a hole for an electrical grommet that is barely visible under the hose from the reservoir to the cylinder? I tried the pedal assembly in the 86 cab, but the one existing hole in the firewall that seemed close had a grommet and wires already in it.

It looks like the mouning studs for the cylinder lie at about 45 degrees from horizontal. Is that correct.

Did you modify the tunnel for the big hump on your cab? I mocked the high hump cover I have on my 2wd cab, it is close, but the two flanges on the side of the cover will need some hammer work to fit flat against the floor. Is there a difference in the covers from the 73-80 and 81-87?

I was going to use the tall cover to give me some extra clearance around the Hurst street super shifter I plan to install on a four speed.

yes, there is a hole under the master cylinder. if i remember correctly, the holes that are visible in the pic (the one directly below the bulkhead connector, and the one peeking out from behind the MC hose) are for cruise control and TCC lockup. you are correct, the studs do come out at about a 45* angle. i got a hump from a friend for a K truck, and was going to put it in, but the rear of the hump sat up too high, i have no idea what it came out of. when i bought my 81 K30, it was factory equipped with a 465/205 combo, and had the correct hump for that combo. it appears identical to the one i have that "didnt fit" i accidentally dropped the 465/205 on it when i was loading the truck to bring it home, and now its smashed down a little. ironically enough, it fits the 2wd floorpan perfect. i believe the 2wd humps are a bit smaller, and only to the drivers side, where the 4x4 humps are complete humps, that span from one side of the hump to the other. i also noticed the flanges on neither of mine were quite flay, but the self tapping screws i was planning on using to secure it will easily take care of that.

I have my clutch master cylinder installed and have another question.

Is the cylinder supposed to point down when it is installed on the firewall. Mine does. The cylinders in the pics look like they are pointing down as well. That just seems wrong.

if you mean sloping downward as it runs towards the front of the truck, you are correct.

Not yet. I found the master and slave cylinders on Ebay. I will check out TJ. Thanks.
