I've noticed this little guy ever since I got my truck but never really paid any attention to it. Now I'm starting to wonder what it is.

Thats my gas pedal

just the other side of the previous pic

That little knob slides down when the the gas pedal is floored. It slides down because my gas pedal pushed it down.

Only thing is...the wires go out the firewall and then are all wrapped up and hanging by my brake master cylinder...they aren't hooked up to anything.

kick down switch for the TH400 tranny.
In 71, they started mounting them on the carb.

Ya know I'll have to check into that tomorrow.

I was given this truck from a friend and he had just gotten it when he gave it to me so I don't exactly know what trans or year engine it has in it.

Like I said, tomorrow I'll go searchin for the engine and transmission number. Where is the transmission number usually located. Oh also, what do you guys recommend to get grease and grime off engine parts. I was gonna break out the can of carb-cleaner, a brush and some soapy water. I have a bit of cleaning to do if I'm going to find these numbers.

Easiest way to tell what type of tranny you have is to look at the pan on the tranny undernieth, if it is in the shape of a square with one side kind of missing= TH350, if the under part looks kinda like the state of texas= TH400.

I've never heard the 400 described like that before. Works though. I'll remember it next time i describe it.

My 80 GMC has a similar slider switch for it's TH400 kickdown

Infact, I have yet to see a TH400 equipped truck with the kickdown on the carb...

Hmmm cool tip chevy...in that case I have the TH350. When I'm looking at it from underneath the bottom left corner looks cut-off.

Can I still wire the kick down switch to it?

I'll tell ya guys...I've learned so much in just the few days I've been a member here. I'm loving it..ty very much for all your help

Andy got it wrong - hard to believe. Maybe he typed it wrong. 67-70 and kick-down on CARB. 71-72 had kick-down in CAB. When they changed to the throttle cable the kick-down changed also. A T350 uses a cable for kick-down not electric.

Bob...you are right. I did have it confused...not a typo.
You can not use the electric switch for your TH350. If it was installed properly, then there is a cable coming up from the passenger side of the tranny by the dip stick tube going up to the throttle on the drivers side of the cab. This is your kick down. It is often left disconnected in swaps liek this, or never adjusted properly.

Im guessing the cable is ther laying on top of the trans under the floor where you cant see it. if it was missing alltogether you would have massive amounts of fluid spilling out the hole it fits in (near the cooler line fittings).

Ok so today I worked on my truck somemore and found this.

Notice what I believe to be the kick down cable to the right of the transmission dipstick.

Ok now I followed that up to my engine and this is where it attached. Notice the distributor to the left and thats the intake manifold right underneath.

Would this whole setup be my kick down deal?

Yup... your truck has a TH350 in it...and it used to have a TH400.

Yeah I'm pretty sure my friend's(the one that gave me the truck) uncle did an engine/trans swap.
