Going to Santa Barbara for the week

Let me know if there is anything I can bring back to mid-america that will either fit in my suitcase or in a box with my luggage.

This is good for the soul...
Go to Isla Vista (campus town of UCSB) ask around and get directions to Pelican Point, and take in the sunset there. If you see a 50something ex-flower child hippy chick doing the same thing, say hi. It will be my sister. She has set that as one of her goals, to see the sunset from there every day, and with very few exceptions she has done so for the last 40 years. We grew up in SB. Well, all of us except her. I was dragged, kicking and screaming, from there in '72, when the folks moved here to Utah. I was 13, and Santa Barbara to Wanship,Utah (pop. 100 or so) was a culture shock so intense I can't even describe it 33 years later. Jeez, I was just getting good at surfing, too. Make sure you hit the Stearn's wharf smoker at lunch time. Any seafood you can get in the area, straight from the boat to the smoker. It just can't be beat!

ChevyDude-Dude! If you went to La Colina, and graduated San Marcos '76, we went to school togther. I went to La Colina '71-'73, and would have gone to Micky Marcos had I stayed in SB.

I have been going to Santa Barbara, for work, on a regular basis since 1994. Now I go once a month, usually for 4 or 5 days, for the past three years.

chopped 71 - would like to catch up with you this trip, maybe do lunch or dinner. Love to see your truck and talk parts. I work at Airport Plaza, near the airport on Fairview a couple blocks from Hollister. Email is rlcrockett@aol.com

pritch - I usually eat lunch, once every trip, at Freebirds at Isla Vista. Great burritos.

Chopped 71-

Where 'bouts in Goleta? I lived off Walnut, about four or five blocks west of Hollister. Walnut was (is?) the deviding line between Goleta School district and SBSD. Since I lived 4 houses South of Walnut, I went to SB schools, but most of my friends went to Goleta. Dos Pueblos, mostly. Man, this is bringing back some memories. I spent a lot of time in I.V., my hippy sister even took me to the riots in Feb, '70. I didn't see the bank burn down, but it was still smokin' the next day when I was there. Boy, did we ever get into trouble over that. We used to go to the airport drive-in. I wonder if it's still there? Out the back of our house was Moore Mesa, and from the time I was about 7 or 8 years old, we would walk to MM beach and hang out. Got an education real quick there.

Ricks Trucks-I ain't been to Freebirds, but there used to be a place called New York Hero House, best meatball sandwichs on the planet IMHO. I wonder if it's still there, also. Do they still have the 'Guppies' at the airport? These were special planes that hauled around rocket sections when the moon shots were going on. These things were the funniest looking planes you could imagine. They were almost bigger around than long.

I'll heading to S.B. Monday as well.
Gotta go pick up the rest of my crap I left there when I moved to Flagstaff.

Santa Barbara kind-of has a boomerang effect. You leave but you always end up going back.

I remember the burning of the Bank of America very well. My dad and my step dad both taught at UCSB so that Isla Vista event very much in the forefront as it happened. As high school students the Isla Vista scene was all about party's and then more party's. Pritch...I do believe we were at La Colina at the same time.

So it looks like Tuesday and Wednesday are the only days all three of us will be here. Let me know if you want to get together Tuesday or Wednesday evening. I am here now. Checked in at Tulsa airport one minute late to get my bags on, so had to wait til next flight. My watch was slower than the computers, so it won - I thought I still had 5 minutes.

I don't know about the timing, but we lived in the same 'hood. I was there 'till '73 or so.

Ricks Trucks-Thanks for starting this thread. I've learned of neighbors and classmates right here on the board!

Seldon, great meeting you today. Man that yellow truck is awesome. Look forward to talking again when I come back in May (end of the first week). BTW - the parts fit perfectly in my suitcase and the TSA guy didn't comment.
