I buttoned her up and went backward down the street to adjust it. Are the drums supposed to get hot to the touch?

with the rear on jack stands and a support to keep the truck from rolling. Can you spin the tire freely(take the tranny out of park too)? brakes do get hot enough that you can't touch them, how long did you drive for? Did you bleed the lines?

I did spin it around while it was on the jack stands and I didnt hear any noises on it. So I torqued the tire to 100 lbs and drove it backward down the street adjusting it. THen took off for a 10 mile run. About halfway I slowed down to 15-20 and locked her up. Since I have only down the left rear (daddy duty again tonight It was the first to lock. I have not bled them yet. I am going to when I replace the right rear tomorrow night.

Did you rebuild the wheel cylinder? It is wet looking as though it might be leaking. A leaking wheel cylinder will cause brakes to lock.

The wheel cylinder is not wet. Just looks that way in the pic. I was going to replace it but I cant due to the fact that the bolts that hold it in in the back are stripped out completely. I tried everything I know to get that bolt loose and could not get it to budge.

Did you manually adjust the brakes? An old mechanic taught me to adjust them manually until they have just a little drag when spinning the drum.

BTW, drum brakes adjust manually only in reverse. So drive around the neighborhood in reverse a few times.

Its not uncommon for drums not to adjust properly. Another gotcha, over the years people will sometimes get the adjusting mechanisms mixed up from side to side.

Skokie,

Since living in Michigan means dealing with rust and we have found ways to get the bolts out which usually works.
The first attempt is to drive a metric socket onto bolt after it is soaked down with Aerokroil or other good penetrant. Once the socket is driven onto the bolt we use an impact wrench and this usually spins the bolts out.

If that fails we use an air chisel to spin the bolt out by hammering on the bolt in a counter clockwise direction.

I have never not gotten the bolts out and have never had to drill them out either.
